Peace Over War San Juan Island is well known for splendid vistas, saltwater shore, quiet woodlands, orca whales and one of the last remaining native prairies in the Puget Sound/Northern Straits region. But it was also here in 1859 that the United States and Great Britain nearly went to war over possession of the island, the crisis ignited by the death of a pig.

Beautiful beach! No one else was there when we visited so it was very peaceful. Short walk but worth the trip.

One of the best trips of my life was when my little brother and I took our bicycles to the island and road around for three days, camping along the ocean.

Great, easy loop hike! Park at Jakle’s Lagoon trailhead. Grab a reusable trail guide in the box next to map. Gorgeous views! Sound on the right for most of hike - part of trail through very pretty forest. A few trails off main trail lead to quiet lagoons. A couple easy and quick switchbacks and mild to moderate climbs.

My wife and I loved this short hike! Very pretty, super easy. Gorgeous view of the Olympics on a clear day

having grown-up on SJI this short hike was a part of my child-hood, youth and now I love taking my kids up there and boring them about how "when I was your age my mom would snap a photo of me on that very same madrona tree" -- the good memories this place resurrects match the peacefulness of the setting -- looking west out over the straights, over the southern tip of Vancouver island -- or, make the trip up before sunset and watch the big orange ball plunge into the sea -- then have fun finding your way down the trail beneath the towering fir -- always a good fun walk

short but sweet views of sound.

Not much of a hike more of a walk but beautiful views and some of the clearest waters I’ve ever seen in Washington

Great views!

Great views and easy hike. The road sign is Jackle's Lagoon.

great 1mi hike. pretty much straight up and straight down. there is a lookout most the way up which is great but don't forget to continue to the top.

Beautiful views and a peaceful walk.

Just beautiful!

The views at the top are beautiful. It's a steady incline with some switchbacks. Lush, wild flowers beginning when we were there early May. Even with a drizzle and overcast day, it was well worth the hike.

The description says Stuart island. it is actually on San Juan island. I've done it probably 30 times and it never fails to impress. Several side trails if you like around.

Easy hike. Beautiful views

Love, love, love this trail!!! The madrone trees are gorgeous and the view from the top is unbeatable! So beautiful!! I would do this over and over again if I lived nearby!

Beautiful views of the straight and nice wide trails. We saw Hawks and seals. Not very many people either.

Best hike we did on Lopez. There is enough elevation gain to the marker to make it good exercise and the vistas along the rugged coastline are magnificent. Must park at Agate Beach parking lot and hike down private road to bat and ball lane where the trail entrance is.

Very nice short walk, with great view as a payoff. Definitely take some time to enjoy this gorgeous coast.

Really nice hike

Reef Sanctuary on the west side of the island, where a short 10-minute walk through a forest will lead to a rocky shoreline where you’ll get views over the water and I saw a seal (and perhaps sea lion or otter), just be sure to follow the path around to the left.

Closet thing to an alpine hike in Victoria.

This hike had a fun history component. The hike itself was a bit bland and may not be worth it unless you are a history buff. Not a ton of people around which was nice but we did go on a Tuesday afternoon.

An easy trail with incredible views at the top! Stop at the first view point, but make sure you continue to the top for even better views.

After doing the Young Hill hike this was a letdown, no good views and it's mostly forest. I didn't even know we were near the ocean most of the walk.

Great trail, moderate but well worth the hike to the top where you get great views.

Great trail! From the parking lot, walk down to the encampment and walk across the encampment (to the right) and begin the trail closest to the water. Beautiful forest adjacent to the water and plenty of Stellar Sea Eagles. Had the trail to ourselves!

Great trail! Encompasses grassy rolling plains with ocean views with plenty of photo ops of both Bald and Stellar Sea Eagles as well as incredibly dense and luscious evergreen forest. We started out on the Mt. Finlayson Trail along the cliffs and approximately 1.5 miles took the 0.4 mile connector path over to the 1.5 mile Lagoon Trail to return to the parking area. Trail is well marked.
The is an incredible trail we had to our selfs. This island has trails that will make your head spin with their beauty. Family of four visiting from Philadelphia for a week of jammed hiking here and at Olympic National Park, this was certainly one of many highlights!
