Peace Over War San Juan Island is well known for splendid vistas, saltwater shore, quiet woodlands, orca whales and one of the last remaining native prairies in the Puget Sound/Northern Straits region. But it was also here in 1859 that the United States and Great Britain nearly went to war over possession of the island, the crisis ignited by the death of a pig.

My wife and I loved this short hike! Very pretty, super easy. Gorgeous view of the Olympics on a clear day

short but sweet views of sound.

Not much of a hike more of a walk but beautiful views and some of the clearest waters I’ve ever seen in Washington

Great views and easy hike. The road sign is Jackle's Lagoon.

Beautiful views and a peaceful walk.

Very nice short walk, with great view as a payoff. Definitely take some time to enjoy this gorgeous coast.

Really nice hike

Reef Sanctuary on the west side of the island, where a short 10-minute walk through a forest will lead to a rocky shoreline where you’ll get views over the water and I saw a seal (and perhaps sea lion or otter), just be sure to follow the path around to the left.

Closet thing to an alpine hike in Victoria.

This hike had a fun history component. The hike itself was a bit bland and may not be worth it unless you are a history buff. Not a ton of people around which was nice but we did go on a Tuesday afternoon.

After doing the Young Hill hike this was a letdown, no good views and it's mostly forest. I didn't even know we were near the ocean most of the walk.

Great trail! From the parking lot, walk down to the encampment and walk across the encampment (to the right) and begin the trail closest to the water. Beautiful forest adjacent to the water and plenty of Stellar Sea Eagles. Had the trail to ourselves!

Great trail! Encompasses grassy rolling plains with ocean views with plenty of photo ops of both Bald and Stellar Sea Eagles as well as incredibly dense and luscious evergreen forest. We started out on the Mt. Finlayson Trail along the cliffs and approximately 1.5 miles took the 0.4 mile connector path over to the 1.5 mile Lagoon Trail to return to the parking area. Trail is well marked.
The is an incredible trail we had to our selfs. This island has trails that will make your head spin with their beauty. Family of four visiting from Philadelphia for a week of jammed hiking here and at Olympic National Park, this was certainly one of many highlights!

Beautiful hike with a lot of history. Makes a great "date" hike, especially if you stay at Roche Harbor! Or you could camp, (not at this park though)-- it just costs so much to ride the ferry to get to the island, you really should stay awile.
