Hiking

Short pull from trailhead through nice second growth, benches out at 1 mile mark with quick scamper the last 300’ up the scree outcropping to the old look out site. Stunning 360* views, only other person on the trail late afternoon 7.9.20. Very tranquil, pack a layer it’s chilly b4 sunset on the way down.

Walking

Very short but very fun if you bring a light for the lava tube and I suggest a bike helmet for the young ones. Our 3 year old loved it!

great trail with amazing views that really pay off at the top. recommend good hiking shoes as some portions are quite rocky with loose stones, so please be careful

Trail is in excellent shape! No garbage to be seen anywhere, other than a doggie doo bag. On my way down, I passed a couple of groups, each with a dog. Hopefully whoever owns the doo bag will pick it up on their way down. It's very buggy about 3 miles in. If you stop, the mosquitoes will swarm you. I put on repellent but the mosquitoes don't care. I enjoyed the hike. It's on the easy side of moderate. Oh, and the lake is gorgeous! The water is blue-green. Very cool!

Drive was pavement all the way to the Trailhead. Trail is well maintained and definitely on the easy side of moderate, majority of the trail is shaded and through thick tree cover with gradual elevation increase. Barely any views on the way so the trail can get monotonous, but the lake itself is spectacular, and lots of easily accessible campsites. Would definitely do this again, especially if coming back for camping.

Completed 6/27 Trails are not very well marked except for the trailhead at Cispus Learning Center. Didn’t make it all the way to angel falls as some of our party was ready to go back after going under Covel Creek Falls. Dog friendly. Completed with 5, 8, 8, 10 and 12 year old. (5 year old did the best lol). Pretty hike. Will come back without kids to go to angel falls and onward to the lookout.

Really really crowded! I recommend going left and around instead of straight to the falls.

Wonderful trail! Two lakes in the middle of dense forest. Gorgeous and serene. The trail was tight at times, and a bit muddy, but manageable. A few nice cutbacks with inclines. Part of the trail crosses a creek. Hiked the trail an hour before sunset and didn’t consider hiking back in the dark. Even though I wasn’t prepared, and with out a light, an iPhone flashlight was enough and the return trip took about 30 min.

Logged 8.48 miles, 2474’ elevation gain, 3:06 total Beautiful and well maintained trail. Drive up was paved and smooth, minimal potholes. Trailhead is clearly marked and bathroom was open and clean. Separate trail for hiking vs biking/ATV/horses. Could definitely trail run this too. Brought my dog! Trail was very wide and well maintained, easy to pass other groups. Shaded the majority of the time with intermittent views of the mountains. Very flat with barely noticeable elevation gain/loss. Would be easy for kids if they can handle the mileage. Views at the lake were absolutely stunning and I would do this hike again in a second!

Mosquitoes were a bit pesky, but the views were worth it. And, the park ranger was super nice.

Nondescript trail, nice lake at the end. Long gravel forest service road leading to it - generally in good shape, but a few large potholes. Truck recommended, but not essential. A couple of gorgeous waterfalls on the drive. Trail head is a bit before the spot on this map, and trail is a solid 1.5 miles each way for a total of 3 miles.

Definitely worth the view! Steep uphill most of the way up. Beautiful wildflowers. A few bugs. Not too many people on the trail.

One of my favorite trails. It’s a bit of an incline to the top, but I passed families with their kids on the way and they made it just fine. Trail was kept in really good shape. Follow the signs on the trail, GPS will direct you to keep following the road but doesn’t take you to the parking area and trail. We got to the trail by 9:30, there were only 2 other cars. When we left around 1:30, there were cars lined on the road. Best to go early. Once up top it was amazing. Gorgeous views, fresh air & the area was just stunning.

Absolutely incredible hike, pretty much nothing but uphill there and the opposite coming back. Was clouded in when I went but still an incredible feeling to be on top of the world. Would recommend this highly though it can get quite busy on weekends.

Dog mountain junior. My legs for sure got a workout. But it was a good rewarding hike. Did Spirit Falls before this. Great combo. Dog mountain will be next for me. (Not today tho!)

I agree with the other recent reports. The drive is ok, but some of the bumps will cause a little scrape even at slow speeds. I made it with a minivan, no real issues. Takes about 20 minutes once you turn onto the last road. The hike itself was great. Beautiful. Made it with 3 kids under ten and two dogs. The last mile is tough, and had a lot of mosquitos. But the end was worth it!

Great trail with beautiful scenery all the way! There were 8-10 trees that were blown down and near the end of our hike there was a short section that was overgrown...nothing that was a deal breaker...

Hiked on 7/4/20. Completed about 4.5 miles before deciding to turn back. This could be a great trail, but it has some issues. The pros: -Slow, steady incline makes for a nice hike -Some great views along the way -Variety of scenery The cons: -Narrow, overgrown trail -Rocky and/or sandy most of the way -Lots and lots of trees down -Trail can be difficult to pick up coming out of the several gulch crossings -The best views are only accessible by leaving the trail -The first few miles through the Extra Crispy Forest provide little shade -The road to get to the trailhead, especially around the camp, is not pleasant to drive In short, probably wouldn't attempt this one again.
