After all the great reviews, I was disappointed in this one for road biking. This trail is in lackluster and rough condition. There are numerous areas where tree roots have buckled the asphalt, and there is one deep depression that would wreak havoc on a road bike tire. I would recommend at least 32 mm wide tires. That puts you in hybrid territory, and one could make the argument a mountain bike would be even better. The trail is one-bike wide in several spots, and there are a few tunnels, bridges and other segments for which one needs to dismount to navigate safely. This is especially true since the trail was heavily trafficked on this Saturday. Compared to trails farther outside the city, pedestrians walk two or three wide here, and some seem to hesitate--or simply refuse--to yield. FYI, parking at the trailhead is about $2.50/hr.--if you can find a space. I guess this is a nice escape for some who live in the city, but it's not worth the trip from elsewhere.

Good for running, but views aren't anything special (there are better trails in the park) and crowded.

More vertical and more bike and foot traffic than I would have liked.

Nice, but a lot of people. Even in the winter.

Solid dog walking trail, but pretty practical in terms of scenery. Would go to have a walk and talk

Even though I selected road biking related to the paved portion of the main trail, this area is also great for mountain bikers as well as hikers. There are plenty of side dirt trails that wind their way through the wooded park. You will see plenty of wild life like deer and beaver, even though the trail runs through neighborhoods from DC to northern Montgomery county Maryland. That being said, a word of caution. As with any outdoor activity that involves traversing secluded areas, you should never go alone. Take a friend with you. Take your phone and carry something to defend yourself because it it better to be safe than sorry. There have been reports of lone runners and hikers being attacked and abducted on the trail so, stay alert.

It's great for biking! But it's a bit hilly, so many bikers choose to use the road along it instead, which makes driving on that road difficult sometimes.
