Explore the most popular Nature Trips trails in Shenandoah National Park with hand-curated trail maps and driving directions as well as detailed reviews and photos from hikers, campers and nature lovers like you.

Start from the lower parking lot to get the steep ascent out of the way at the beginning. Watch where you step, especially near the waterfalls, as there are snakes and it’s slippery. Love this hike! The natural waterslides are an added bonus.

Overall the trail was nice. A few things to consider though. 1st. The trail starts without anything really nice to look at. But the forest begins to open up about a mile into it and it begins to get nice. 2nd. It is not 1.9 miles out and back. The trail is 2.5 miles out (down hill) and 2.5 miles back (uphill). 3rd. It is right at a 1000 foot elevation gain on the return trip. Having said all that. It is a great hike for beginners. Nothing technical. Just a stroll through the woods!

Hawksbill is a wonderful view! from lower hawk it’s a steep incline at start so be ready!

This trail was easy but started with a pretty steep incline, so be prepared! We went on a Saturday evening before sunset and didn’t see many people but did see a few deer!:) we also saw bear poop so be cautious

Completed this loop in about 7.5 hours with my 11 year old son, stopping for about 40 minutes to swim. We went counter clockwise, which if I did it again, I'd go clockwise. Very steep coming up White Oak Canyon trail where as the Cedar Run trail was not as steep. Great hike, great views and a lot of great folks on the trails! Always remember LNT, picked up a lot of trash on the White Oak Canyon trail headed back up. Plastic water bottles and food wrappers.

Nice little hike with an amazing view at the top. I parked at Skyland and customized a route from there.

August- little rain. the fall was barely flowing.

Nice moderate hike. Took us about 2 hours to do the whole thing out and back. Great trail conditions. Very well maintained and nice waterfall view at the bottom.

Great trail. Ran closer to 8 miles and the Jones Mountain Trail was a nice trade off back to the AT. Enjoyed all the rick formations in that goat trail. Done Mill Prong before, but this was the first time we did the loop. Good time.

A quick, nice little trail. The views are okay but if you are looking for something shorter then go to Humpback Rocks. Bugs!

I’ve done over a dozen trails in Shenandoah and this is definitely in my top 3! I’m not sure why the trailhead marker says to expect 9 hours to complete... I average a little slower on this trail due to incline, but I still completed it in 3 hours and 40 mins. Bring a swimsuit if you want to swim! Water is nice and cold in the warm weather. I would also advise you to bring bug spray, unfortunately; it was very muggy today and they were out in force. Otherwise a nice trail with some great views. I would recommend starting left on the trail - there’s not much to look at if your headed North back up to the starting point which can be a little disheartening after you’ve just completed 7.5 miles.

Overall it was a great hike; however there were a decent amount of gnats buzzing about. I had two dogs (GSD and Mal) on the trail with the family. Halfway there’s a small creek the dogs soaked their paws in to cool off a bit. For the views the left is best. Right the view was covered by treetops and was a pretty steep hike. Additionally the trail were lined with wild flowers and mushrooms. Would recommend shoes with ankle support and bug spray. ⚠️Tip: at the entrance take the first (hard) right onto the flat pathway. If you miss it and take the second right you end up on the Appalachian trail (rocky; downhiller, uphill back is a cardio burner). Note—-had broken glass probably about the first 20m so if you have pups be careful with their paws.

If you have kids then ok a nice option. In my opinion it’s crowded.

Wonderful walk. I may have done it backwards. Ran into three sets of people hiking with dogs. All very kind.

Great hike. Took our two dogs and two kids (10&11). There were some challenging areas with the rock midway and at the summit. The top is worth the hike, but definitely challenging for the kids and dogs. I would rate this closer to the moderate because of the rocks, but doable with the distance being a short hike.

More popular than I thought it would be. The trail is well-traveled and easy to find. I took full advantage of the swimming holes on a hot, humid day.

No real good view of waterfall. Nice overlook of mountains. Strenuous elevation in some areas.

We saw a bear run across the trail and noped out Overall beautiful trail

Make sure you pay attention to the trail markings. There were a lot of different trails in the area and it’s easy to get on the wrong trail. Poured the entire way but I think it was worth it.
