Good trail. two problems. It's right beside the interstate so you hear cars constantly. It's also right across the interstate from the biggest trash dump on the peninsula so you will smell garbage half the time you are there. That said, I love the trail and the park.

I will also day that some of these reviews are a bit misleading. This is the main trail at the park, but a lot of people seem to be taking side trails and reviewing this one as if they are the same trail (commenting on roots etc). this is a very easy trail and only consists of the loop around the wetlands, it doesn't go into the woods proper.

Not bad except for the highway being right next to you.

Nice place to walk.
For a small stretch , you can hear cars.

Beautiful ducks. Nice place to walk.

Nice trail. Follows along the lake.
Sometimes you can hear the cars.

The trail was easy to follow and pretty flat. There were lake views and was mostly wooded. I gave it 3 stars for several reasons. It was crowded and the people did not seem friendly. I prefer more rural trails. Most of the trail is next to a very busy and loud highway. There’s also a lot of loud overhead jet noise. The other side of the trail backs up to peoples homes. And there are apparently rattle snakes although I didn’t see any. I wasn’t aware we even had rattle snakes in this area. It was a nice length though. They did have a dog park which was empty but I wouldn’t use it based on the unfriendliness of the people there. I don’t think we’ll be doing this one again.

It was hard for to find a map of the park. I actually got lost and had to pull up my all trails app to find someone else's trail gps they did.... after I finally found it, it was a pretty run... there are a lot of roots on some parts though...

Can be run in less than half an hour. Walks can take an hour or more.

Scenery is nice for a majority of the way.

For about a quarter of a mile, you get close enough to the highway to catch a whiff of the exhaust produced by the cars. This messes with my breathing.

Despite this, I still chose this as my preferred trail and run it every day after work!

nice place to run and bring family

Great easy trail. Saw lots of wildlife. Trail is a little load along the road sections, but I would definitely walk it again.

Easy path, even with little kids. Scenery by the lake is great with lots of turtles and ducks for young ones to watch.

We were able to push our double stroller along this trail- it was bumpy at times, but doable. A good portion of the path runs alongside the highway and is so incredibly loud, my husband and I couldn't hear each other and had to shout at one another- we were SO glad when that stretch finally ended. Because of that, we probably will not do it again.

This trail is a nice length and just the right amount of mixed scenery and trail type. The trail does get very wet when it rains and a few parts do not dry out...ever. There are parts that hold water and are difficult to get around. This is one of the fewer traveled trails so it has areas that have higher grass and during slow times you may not run into anyone. In the summer it is mostly shaded with a few stretches in full sun. The mosquitos can be vicious due to the standing water, bring bug spray.

Not the best for bikes as there are so many roots everywhere so makes for an extremely bumpy ride. There are parts of the trail where you feel you are so far from the city which is really nice. Saw some pretty amazing birds (very large), and beware of the black snakes as they like to frequent the trails. Great place to kayak too. Rented one of the yurts for a nite, had 2 bunk beds with trundles underneath so can sleep quite a bit.

Just did the trail yesterday morning. Good trail; thick wooded area nice pathway. Pretty easy trail although can be muddy after rain so take that into account also.

Definitely a mixed trail, depending on the location within the park. Some areas have good views, others are bland. One section is close to the highway, while others seem quiet and secluded. The areas near the parking and picnic areas can get a little crowded, but the further out you hike, the more solitude there is to enjoy.

The portion of the trail that runs adjacent to Hampton Roads Center Parkway can get a little flooded and soggy at times. Like most parks and trails, it closes at sunset.

This offers a nice and easy three mile hike with plenty of wildlife. When I went the end of July I was able to see four or five deer including a doe with her fawn. The bad thing about this park is there is a section of the trail very close to a busy road.

Mostly flat and gravely. Some roots once you get off of the gravel portion.

There is a nice information center that has different kinds of turtles, snakes and lizards that are in small habitats for people to look at. There are other items on display for guests to look at such as insects and animal bones. Guests can also rent kayaks, canoes and paddle boats. The trails are decent, very wide with some nice look out points. There is also an area where injured animals are being cared for, not many can be seen as this area is not open to the public. The down side was that the highway is so close that there are areas on the trails that cars can be seen, heard and exhaust can be smelled.

I take walks through Sandy Bottom occasionally with my wife and dog. There are some areas where water will tend to pool up on the paths if there has been some rain, but they are normally easy to get around.

Overall something for everyone at this park. Somewhere to ride, run or hike!

Pretty and simple trail. Spends some time too near a highway to feel like a hike, but most of it is splendid. Great for running.

on Wood Duck Trail: Long Loop

I hiked this trail on a low-energy day, but it would be a blast to sprint, or ride. Lots of curves but very well maintained!

About the same as the longer version but too short. Still a nice walk in the woods.

A nice walk in the woods. Bring the bug spray. Also, bring an I pod if you want to drown out the traffic noise from Hampton Roads Center Parkway. At one point this trail passes close to the highway.

There are three entrances to Wood Duck Trail off the main park road. To do the short loop, go in the middle entrance and a short way down the trail you will have to go left or right. Either way will give you a short loop.
