My wife and I drove up from East Tennessee to see the natural tunnel and hike this trail. We started about 830 am and hiked from the parking lot down the trail to the natural cave. The trail was paved and the scenery was beautiful. We reached the natural cave and was awed by the size of the tunnel! Trains hauling coal actively transport through the cave. There are areas around the stone walls before the cave entrance that saltpeter was mined by Confederate soldiers.
We then hiked back up to the parking lot and up Lovers Leap trail. Again the majority of the trail is paved. The lookout point at Lover’s Leap was breathtaking. Well worth the drive from East Tennessee.
