From the vehicle parking, one soon experiences a convoluted mess of intersecting trails & a seemingly 'something for everybody' theme park. The wild ponies, for example, are more akin to tamed food beggars. Great for kids but spelling trouble for the more serious hikers ... but do not despair - keep moving towards the terrific rock croppings of Wilburn Ridge. From there, head to Mt Rogers and achieve the highest elevation in Virginia. Indeed, the further one goes, the more that Tolkien feel of landscape occurs ... and one begins to feel it is all worthy and worthwhile.

This is a great loop trail. Enjoyed the view at Listening Rock. Very peaceful and relaxing. The trail has a moderate climb toward the end but the remainder is fairly easy going. Very nice view at the overlook.

Spectacular hike with amazing views. We stayed for the sunset, which did not disappoint. My 10 year old is already asking to go back and see the ponies, but at sunrise this time!!!

This trail is fantastic. I went after heavy rain in the area which sent quite a bit of water flowing down the mountain so the branch crossings were a bit tricky but very manageable. The lower route follows the creek up the hollow to the water falls. The waterfalls were quite impressive.much more than I was expecting. I took the upper route back which is an easier way to go but following the creek is more fun.

I’m new to hiking, so leaving the parking lot I was unsure of where the trail began. Did I just miss the sign or how do you know where it starts?

Ponies and views! Relatively simple hike. There were some boulders to climb for a great 360 view. Great place to stop at eat a packed lunch! We saw at least 3 ponies. Be careful though because they WILL kick! Also look out for pony poop :P

Recommended to us by the park rangers upon entering Massie Gap. Luckily, we were wearing water proof shoes, because we had to cross a creek a few times. There was a little bit of climbing involved, but the waterfall views at the end were pretty!

Nice view at the low/halfway point; worth it. The trail was well blazed. Lots of leaves on the ground. Plenty of others on the trail on a beautiful sunny Saturday.

Hiked 11-07-20: Very crowded hike! Beautiful pastures and views along the entire trail out and back. Saw 7 horses grazing, 3 in an open field along the trail allowed petting while they were eating. Lots of places to rest, picnic, and take in the views. No real complaints about this trail, which was very well blazed and easy to follow.

The scenery up to the first pinnacle was unique and lovely. Nice views on both pinnacles, but the Big Pinnacle has 360 views. Little effort and great rewards! We started at the (closed) Visitor’s Center and the trail was clearly marked the entire way.

This trail was not difficult when it came to elevation gain. We hiked this after some heavy rains and it was very washed out and made us really think about where we were placing our feet so we did not submerge our trail runners. The top of the trail was extremely windy with gusts upwards of 40mph. We saw a lot of horses along the way which was awesome! A must do trail in the area!

The trail head is very busy with people wanting to see the ponies and spectacular views. However, once you make a right turn onto the AT, you quickly find solitude. The trail provides open trekking as well as wooded cover and is great if you only have an afternoon to get outside for a short hike.
