Such a beautiful hike but once you get past the big alpine meadow the trail just seems to disappear. There are tree markers and cairns for most of it and then all of a sudden there isn’t. We also lost the trail not far from the trailhead coming down and ended up at the Spirit Lake Lodge. I do highly recommend this hike though just bring a GPS and a lot of bug spray!

It’s a short trail. Lake can be reached in about an hour. There are some parts of the trail that disappear but is usually marked by cairns in those spots. There aren’t too many spots for camping but your best bet for a spot would be along the west side of the lake. Fun little day hike though.

Great little spot. Has ponds/ lakes all round it. Above and below. The upper ones are worth the hike up the waterfall. There’s another lake and four other ponds up there in the bowl of the mountain. I went June 8-10th 2018. Still snow all over the place but not excessive. Took a dip in the lake it was obviously freezing but to say I was the only person in a lake is a cool feeling. Most the weekend my group and I were the only people up there. Such a beautiful little area. Definitely worth the drive to get to for the 45 min hike to solitude.

I really liked this trail! I’d say the rating of moderate is accurate. It’s rocky so wear something with an ankle support. The lake is beautiful and we were treated to some elk coming to drink across the lake. We pitched camp back in the trees and had a wonderful time before continuing on our adventure.

Did this hike on 4th of July Weekend 2017. The first 4 miles follows the Uintah River and is beautiful. Tons of trees, few good fishing spots, very nice easy hiking. From Sheep's Bridge you start switchbacks for 4-5 miles. They suck. You feel like you'll never get out. After that you'll cross Krebs Creek. From there I think it's only another 2 miles to the Lower Chain lake. We camped here for 2 days, did lots of fishing and exploring. The hike in took us 7 hours, back took us 4. We'll be going back this year to go all the way to King's. Should be fun

We hiked this trail the first week in August with 7 young men. Beautiful scenery and fun fishing. Spent most of our time at lake 1 and lake 3. However, one of our boys began experiencing nausea and then headache. When we realized he had attitude sickness, we made efforts to get him out, but just a few hours later he passed away on the mountain, just below lake 1. Wished we would have been more knowledgeable of the illness and the threats. I'd encourage all groups to educate themselves on the symptoms of altitude sickness and discuss it in advance with their group. Also take a pulse oximeter. And finally have some sort of satellite communication device. Your preparation may save your life or that of a member of your group or another you encounter in this beautiful terrain.

So this is only 3/4 mile to the lake. If you walk around the lake then you can clock more miles. It's definitely kid friendly. The terrain is mostly rocks and small boulders, which is not my favorite, but there was still a lot of green. The lake is one of the most beautiful I have seen. I walked around the right to the far side and I could have just stared all day. Wonderful views! Quite a few people camping and fishing. Best to go mid week after summer vacation.

Very nice trail, Just nice and easy along the river and the road. If you want to see the flukes but don't want to run 14-17 miles just drive up the road until the fork, take the left fork and there's access to the trail about 1.5 miles from the flumes.

Great for little kids and dogs, good place to backpack in and camp with the family. It's getting cold overnight this time of year.

Easy beautiful trail. Large rocks and dirt trails go through patches of trees, rock platforms and fields of wildflowers and brooks. I went in the beginning of August and there were still lots of beautiful flowers all over throughout the trail. The trail itself is well maintained and defined. Don't get confused by the pond, the lake is further and has a wood sign on a tree. You can actually do an easy loop around the Lake perimeter as well which takes you through more patches of trees and fields of flowers. There were yellow lilies on the far side as well as nice camp sites. I also saw lots of chipmunks and deer even! This is a new favorite!

Easy, well maintained trail with lots of water and beautiful scenery. Don't stop at Ruth Lake. Looking back across the lake from the trail above is spectacular.

I love Tamarack . Easy trail.

One of our favorite family hikes, beautiful wild flowers.

Can't go wrong in the Ashley national forest

Great hike to the lake. A little rocky and wet but not bad. Got a small blow up out on Tamarack well worth it!

Great trail and well maintained. We took our three little girls (5,3.1) for a two-nighter to Ruth Lake! Lots of rock for the kids to explore on.

We just got off the trail today. Ton of downed trees blocking the trail in places. This trail is rated moderate and I agree with it. It's deceiving because you alway think you have reached the top but disappointed that you still have a ways to go. Just FYI, the mileage that is posted with this trail is for round lake. If you are going to Fish Lake it is 4.5 miles. All the fish in the lake were so small that we had very poor luck. We were using spinners which was obviously a bad choice for these lakes. Dry fly fishing in the morning and evening would have been a much better choice.

I had the opportunity to hike through painters basin from whiterocks, and then up the pass to Lake Atwood, and then up a steep rocky pass to the chain lakes, and then back down the Uinta river drainage. Coming out that way due to the steep switchbacks, I swore that I'd NEVER hike up to the chain lakes or lake Atwood from the Uinta river trailhead because it is one of the toughest and steepest switchback trails in the uintas.
10 years later, I'm now contemplating going up this route ;) because it was so amazing, very few people, and awesome fishing.

This is one of my favorite hikes in the area! It's a gorgeous hike to a gorgeous lake. It's easy enough that my older parents and also children enjoy this hike. Beautiful, easy hike.

I took four kids backpacking up here and it was a beautiful area with the lake and several streams. My kids are young and this was the perfect area for a first backpacking trip.

This is a good trail! There is a lot rocks, so make sure you have something with good ankle support. The upper creeks are blown out due to snow melt, so the crossing are a bit sketchy. Overall a very good hike that gives you a good workout!

Perfect hike for kids and beginners. Nearly flat, gorgeous scenery, and a quiet lake. But OMG the mosquitoes in July! Would love to do this in the fall before the snow because the swarms of mosquitoes detracted a bit from the hike. They don't care about biting through OFF or clothing!

A definite favorite for my family with little kids.

Easy hike took less than 30 mins. Con... Mosquitoes all over the place and OFF doesn't phase the little F'ers...
