This is an odd one. It's practically empty seven days a week - the only time you'll see people is at the Commerce Street overlook, which is a popular photo spot - and sometimes various access points (e.g. on Sylvan) are closed for no apparent reason. Parts of it can be muddy. Yet it's an interesting flat running trail nonetheless. You can run on the levee itself, some of which (particularly under freeways) is paved, or down on the gravel/dirt track at river level. Up top, there's great views and breezes - ideal for summer. Down below, sometimes you'll see guys fishing, or even some avian life. Note that this is given as an out-and-back trail, but it's technically possible to "loop" it if you really want to, but this involves going to the far south eastern edge and crossing the river just east of Corinth, then getting up to street level at wherever you began from, crossing back to the north/south as applicable. It also interconnects with the Santa Fe trestle trail near Deep Ellum, so you could loop it that with with a run back through the city, if you don't mind the fumes and the lights. Basically, check a map first if you go off the trail itself. In fact there are tons of possibilities here for jogging and running, which makes it all the more mystifying why, five minutes from downtown, it's practically deserted. One star off for poor maintenance in places. Edit: As of this weekend (July 13th) I have found a large patch of spent ammunition casings, as well as broken glass, on the trail. Not off-trail, not on some obscure loop, but right on one of the busiest sections. No idea what happened, but be forewarned. As such, I am moving this down to three stars. I will say that everyone I've actually spoken to on the trail has been great, but seemingly there are people around who would abuse it. And the city doesn't seem to care. Maybe this is why it's so poorly patronized.

Well maintained and good for many activities at all age and skill levels. Nice escape from the traffic and has some decent views of the Dallas skyline.

Ran this today - hidden gem. Definitely a headphone run because of the location but variety of sites - great views of the city , lots of birds at the east end, hidden graffiti art bridge and caught a game of cricket too! Keep your eyes open .
