This trail is calming. There are trails that go near the river or that are surrounded by trees and few small prairies. People hike, walk their dogs, run, have picnics, fish. The parts of the trail closer to the river are shady, the Medina river green way trail has less shade, you should definitely wear a hat and bring water if you are walking this trail on a hot day, also the trail closer to Jet road entrance has some steep curves. There are flowers to view during spring time. I have seen wild pigs, an armadillo, I saw a black baby wild pig crossing the trail the other day. Also a water moccasin crossed my path as well as a checkered garter snake. Usually see vultures, hawks and crested caracaras. During migration we were privileged one year to hear and see a juvenile bald eagle flying overhead. A part of the trail on the green way is re routed currently.

Nice and peaceful walk along the river... easy enough for all levels.

It was an easy but very peaceful walk along the river.

Hiked the Rio Medina loop...all is brown in January. Trails were mostly dry except for a couple soft spots easily avoided. There is a shooting range nearby which was a bit unnerving.

Starting off the trail you will be in more of a pasture land until you get down by the river. The trees and scenery are great and makes you forget you are close to the city. Downside was the trail was closed down at mile 3 and the park rangers do not have a timeline of when it will be open again. Restrooms were very clean. The sidewalks are very nice, however be careful when wet as they become very slippery.

This trail offers it all! From rivers to forests to deserts to steep hills to historic/haunted sites! The farther you go into the trail, the more peaceful & shaded. There is lots of natural life to see such as flowers, armadillos, & snakes. It's perfect for walkers, hikers, bikers, etc.

I recommend parking on the Highway 16 side & heading west towards Applewhite Rd.

I used to live right down the road & now I'm in Florida & miss this trail so much.

Beautiful hardwood Forrest scenic vows of the Medina

Cover of trees
Unique view of river

It was a nice short hike. My dogs enjoyed putting their feet in the water. Just hated the fact that there was soooo much poison ivy.

Went February and weather was good. The unpaved trail is alright and links up to river, but not moderate trail and really easy. The paved trail is nice and good for beginners. Next time I'm bring my bike to enjoy more.

Great walking trail.. Very few people on a weekday. It is posted that dogs are allowed on leash. It's nice they have signs for local trees and plants.

Great paved path for biking along the Greenway.

I was thoroughly impressed at what this unexpected gem of a natural area and trails had to offer. Something for just about everyone and within a short drive for a short getaway for the everyday worker. Long hike, short hike, 1-18 mile run, bike paved, bike unpaved, mostly disabled accessible areas, fishing, bird watching, camp, group event pavilions, shade. Hidden among miles of farmland and along the river. Amazing variety of massive ancient trees along the river trails. You can park at the Natural Preserve Area or the Old Applewhite Rd, which cuts the long trail in half.

Very nice trail! Well maintained, with lots of spots to stop and rest. Defiantly pay attention when walking around some of the curves/bends on the trails, walked right up on a snake!

I hiked the full trail and it's actually over 14 miles. There's a lot of sunny areas so bring lots of water. Don't try the full trail unless you're ready.

What a great morning ride. The canopy of trees along the river offered cool and shady ride with the cacophony of birds contributing to your overall experience . The trail continues up through meadows and brush land, so you get it all with a winding, multi elevation ride including steep switchbacks. The naturalists were very helpful to us describing the lay of the trail. The trail maintenance was superb. Clean bathrooms. Can't wait to ride this one in the fall.

A decent trail, few ups and downs but nothing difficult. Peaceful, quiet, and serene. This time of the year definitely start early in the morning, beat the Texas heat to the punch. Another plus, everyone is really friendly.
