I think we hit all the high points/trails we wanted to for the first time. If you are on the Joe Johnston route, definitely check out the overlook trail which has beautiful views and a good spot to stop for a recharge w/ some snacks or lunch with a view. Continuing the joe Johnston trail to windmill Definitely starts the more technical parts of the trail. Also, windmill trail doesn’t have a windmill? (There’s a small piece of metal that looks like it was once part of it) 8 miles total for everything we could fit in.

Have you seen the movie rocky?

Opens only Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Mondays..... shame

Took Joe Johnson to Windmill to small section of black loop down sendero ro recharge. Favorite parts were Windmill and Black Loop. Windmill was fairly flat with open area. no windmill that I could see.

Good trail. Well shaded.

Loved the views of the off shoots! One has a better view than the other because of trees grown in. Would be easy to do with kids.

Similar to the Savannah Loop trail, but longer. Fairly flat, and a good beginner hike. We also have used it for trail running.

Almost died, right leg below knee numb. Fell on left knee, most likely bruised. Overall really good experience

Nice enough for a walk in the woods, but not exactly remote or strenuous. The trails are well marked, sturdy shoes recommended due to some trails being crushed rock with some fairly large fragments. Didn't see any feral hogs, but lots of rooted up areas indicate they're active in the area. The dino tracks were in a creek bed, covered by water, leaves, and algae...but a little imagination conjured up images of them stomping through the canyon. The park ranger said that they are short staffed, so only open Thursday-Sunday most of the year. He also said that if you want to come on a busy weekend it would be good to call for a reservation as they cap the number of daily visitors. Overall, it was a pleasant little hike for being so close to San Antonio.

Wear hiking boots or shoes with a lot of ankle support! Great trail!

I agree, this trail is very rocky and lots of loose gravel so definitely wear ankle supportive shoes/boots. Hats off to bikers on this trail as it will be bumpy ride. I hiked this trail until it connected with the south portion of the Far Reaches trail. The Wildcat Canyon trail itself is lightly traversed and narrower than the JJR Trail with lots of vegetation. Great hike and logged 8.6 miles to-fro the visitor center.

Nice and mostly peaceful trail. Saw several feral hogs and one ran across the trail right in front of me, then stopped and growled at me I growled back at it and it ran off. They have a deeper growl than I expected. Very cool primal experience. The dinosaur tracks had water on them and the ones that were dry were underwhelming. I could hardly tell they were tracks.
