Great accessible El Paso trail. Nice view at the gap of both east and west. Several benches and lookouts along the way. Only downside is the scree rocks at first 1/3 mile. Use poles to save your ankles or take the first alternate trail to the right.

Great trail to hike, super easy just follow the map and have fun.

Avoid the first half mile of large loose rocks by taking Agave Trail to the right, right at the trailhead sign (it's not marked). It only adds a little distance but is oh so much better on footing. Then continue straight at the junction - this is marked, and follow Mundy's Gap trail. We ended up doing this by default, as we started out to hike Cottonwood Trail, but I'd had it with the large loose rocks by the junction. Did the ascent in just under 1 hour (we're late 50's), and the views at the Gap were so cool!

Pluses are trail is very convenient, easy, and pretty. Typical dessert hike. Negative is it is "owned" by mountain bikers, VERY many of them essentially "demanding" the right of way constantly. careening downhill at > 20 mph

Really easy on my knees. Scenic view and still in phone network range.

Great hike with my daughter n my 77 yr old friend with 2 dogs take water n snacks we went inside cave when we got to the mines, is rocky on some terrain

Fun hike! Lots of Deer if you go early.

Must of taken a wrong turn and ended up above the mines, made our way back down. So worth it! The mines were pretty cool to see, definitely going back with flashlights.

This is a nice trail that starts at the West Cottonwood Trailhead. It takes you to an area of trees and a small spring that it is more showy in the rainy season. From this area you start to walk by the steepest section of the trail, then you reach the rim of the mountain from were you have a beautiful view of the Franklin Mountains and the city of El Paso.

Great hike for small group, some steep walking in areas.

good hike last little bit is tough but it was worth it. I will be back with a flashlight to negotiate the actual mines

Extremely rocky. Go slow.

I thought it was a fairly easy trail for hiking. My friend’s young son (about 10 yrs old) joined us and he had no issues doing it. For mountain biking though I do feel it would be a much harder trail. Saw some pretty cool fossils.

on Tom Mays Unit Trail

Nice hike. I did it as part of a hike to the top. I think the bridge that is mentioned in the description got washed out...you can see the wood and steel down on the mountain but the trail is nice. Great views for a short hike. The first 10-15mins are over loose gravel, after that, it’s mainly smooth dirt.

Great short trail with a good amount of ascending. The first section is so so, as it’s all loose rocks ranging from golf ball to base ball size. After the loose section you have dirt and is very enjoyable. Top views are amazing. You get both east and west perspectives. I banged out the ascend solo in 34 min with a light pack. Will do again. #WarchuckApproved.

the hike is quite boring, but the mine at the end is worth the trip

Gnarly and fun

Took my dogs on the trail. They loved it. No shade so they did get quite a bit thirsty. 10/10 would walk my dogs again.

It was a nice trail. Easy to follow a bit rocky but I wouldn’t rate this trail as difficult more moderate. Lizards galore it was a nice sight

really fun trail to take the kids on.

Initial ascend on the upper loop is a little difficult but over all it’s a great trail at Franklin mountain state park. A friend and I got curious and wondered off the trail to the top of a Mesa - led to a great view but at the expense of plenty of cacti scratches and wounds due to going off the planned trails. Easy day hike or warmup for Smugglers Pass Loop.

Good trail to walk your pups and get some energy out

Very easy trail. Gradual incline throughout trail but nothing crazy. So neat to see the mines. Definitely a repeat trip.

This was a great trail. We did not necessarily find it hard. We did get a little off track which we got in about an extra mile. We ended up on Schaffer trail and looped it into our walk ending up at the start of the upper sunset so we just walked back down to the lower sunset trail and finished the trail back out. The hardest part is loose rocks and hiking back up and out. So total we got about 9.16 miles out of it.

Great hike. Not too hard, just longer than I’m used to. Look for the giant metal grate. That’s one of them, with the other one south of it. You could get by with your phone light, but I would recommend bringing a decent flashlight.

Easy hike and easy to get off trail. Ended up being close to 8 miles, due to wandering off the course.
