The road is graded gravel & we saw 3 cars coming out of it, so we took a chance. Besides some birds, we saw no other wildlife. Just the cacti. It was interesting to be among the cacti & be a part of the desert (if you can do that in a car).
After about 5 miles the road got really bad - huge washouts & potholes. A car pulling an RPOD passed us going out. We think they were actually camping back there! The campgrounds were full the night before.

Our favorite scenic drive in the park! Loved it!

This is a great scenic road from Panther Junction. It's got lots of great hikes. A seasonal Visitor Center, a campground & store. The only crossing into Mexico in the park is here.
Saw roadrunners, coyote, rabbits & javelina!!

Bumpy, but great shortcut to Santa Elena. Nice sighting of a primitive structure along the way.

The road was smooth, the scenery great, and I got way too excited driving through the tunnel.

Beautiful drive to make when you first enter the park.

Such a blast. Easier than I expected for me and my stock Jeep Wrangler. Very scenic, beautiful trail. Only a couple of spots where actual 4wd was necessary. Look for the spot with the old grave sites on the hill! No signs but looks very historic. Overall, my favorite off-road trail at big bend.

Scenic drive into the heart of the Chisos leading to multiple trailheads, camping. Camping can be limited in big Bend during the peak season. Plan well ahead.

Nice scenic route on a paved road that takes you past several old abandoned ranches

The paved route takes you through the core of Big Bend NP to numerous trailheads and scenic overlooks. It is a must do to get a good taste of the area.

Drive was awesome and smooth. Rio Grande Area is a large Oasis area different than rest of the park as the river has a lot of low ground to keep moist and provide water for plant life.

Great drive. Had a Bobcat cross the road right in front of me. Washboardy most of the time. End of December I believe most cars could take this road if you weren’t low low. Wish it was worse so I could use my 4x4. Luna Jacal’s house was a nice pit stop to view.

This was a fun and moderate trail! Much more exciting than the River Road which didn't have much more to offer than some sandy parts. I have a 2017 Rubicon with 32" tires and it had no problem at all on this trail. I used the sway bar disconnect for comfort more than anything but I didn't need any lockers. The step is fun but we didn't scrape the bottom or any skid plates.

Always check with park rangers before driving Black Gap. 4x4 with high clearance is a must. We did it in a stock JKU, but thank goodness for skid plates! Coming from the south, it's harder to see the one drop-off (pictured).

Scenic drive from Panther Junction to the Rio Grande Village. Make sure you stop to take pics at the overlook after going through the tunnel.

very scenic and beautiful with a nice tunnel, don't go past the road to the right if you would rather drive than hike to the hot springs. still a little trail but nice and shaded. the road is narrow as can be.

My dogs preferred this ride to some of our off-road drives

Excellent drive. My dogs were pretty tired of the car by the time we got home.

This was a very fun and slightly difficult off road drive. It could be difficult and scary for the inexperienced in parts. I had no problem driving it in a stock JK Wrangler. Four wheel drive low was required in a couple spots to get over some steep inclines and boulders.

This is an easy trail that most cars should be able to handle. It drops you off in a forest of giant dagger yuccas. The sheer number of daggers was impressive, especially when you are looking up at them from the valley floor.

Beautiful. One of the most dramatic drives in Texas. See the article at http://www.texasmonthly.com/travel/on-the-road-again-big-bend/. Note that the entire highway is now paved.

Nice scenery. Roads frequently have places to pull off at the most scenic areas, but not all.

Drove this trail again in Oct 2015. I had read about an unknown grave about 1 mile north of Luna's. I found it, and found out there is another grave on the mesa next to the one by the road to the west. There is also a ruin around behind the hill to the east of the grave. An easy way to find these is the stop where the power line crosses the road. The roadside grave is about 200 feet south of the power line crossing on the west side.
