My family is training for a backpacking trip later this month. This was a great hike with enough elevation to give you a workout and check for fit of your equipment (shoes, packs trail clothing). Beautiful views of Balcones Wildlife Refuge. We were at the trailhead at 7 am and avoided the heat. We hiked the large, outside loop and finished in 2 hours. Enjoy!

Easy breezy! It was a great stroll close to Austin. Stopped in Liberty Hill for lunch. I only wish we would’ve had a view!

It’s a great trail with good views. However, this app tells you to go backwards through the trail. The only reason that matters is that other trails connect to this trail and all signage assumes you hiked this trail counter clockwise instead of clockwise. Also, all of the elevation is in small bursts where you’re on steep rocks. Which is fine unless you didn’t expect it based on this trail being marked “moderate”.

Good trail with some nice terrain changes. Large gravel and rocks cover a good part of it so if you like minimalist shoes you might pick a pair with a sturdier sole. Was glad to find it to avoid running on the road while staying in the area. Light traffic.

Great easy trail. Take my four year old on the loop. She loves it. Went back and did the 3.6 mile. Saw birds and lizards. Typical wildlife. Have gone back multiple times because it’s a nice easy hike :)

Great trail, but narrow. We enjoyed the climbs. Had to go early because of the lack of shade. Lack of wildlife. Very few people in n the trail.

One of my favorite hikes in the area. It has a primitive trail that is slightly covered. It can be a bit overwhelming on a hot sunny day. It’s great place for a hike for my family of teenage children

Went with a friend. It was a fun mid-morning hike with lots of shade. Beautiful lookout at the end and a good workout!

Great little trail! It's just long enough to be interesting, but not too long for three small kids on a hot afternoon. There is alot of shade, which helps on a sunny, hot day. You see an old log cabin, walk through prairie, and walk along a small creek. There are several offshoot trails which will take you right to the edge of the creek.

Very easy, only 2 or 3 times it gets your heart rate up. Very pretty, well maintained trails & signs! no garbage around, so I was pleasantly surprised. Not as many birds as I was hoping, but I enjoyed myself and all the scenery.

Doing the Indiangrass and Rim Rock trails as a big loop is my favorite trail close to Austin, TX. It's gorgeous, well-maintained, and generally not overcrowded. The creek is lovely, and Doeskin Ranch is amazing for birding and nature conservation. There's some shade when hiking up and down the ridge, but a lot of the bigger loop is exposed, so start early in the summer. For a while, the weekend crowds were a little crazy due to the pandemic, but now that things are reopening, the crowds have thinned out to the usual collection of experienced hikers, birders and the occasional family.

Nice shady trail for a warm sunny day. Lovely wildflowers and wooded areas. Perfect distance / challenge for lower elementary kids. As others have noted: Please leave your pets at home. We all love dogs but let’s preserve this area as a wildlife refuge as intended.

Nice low traffic trail, most birders don't seem to go down this way. Be aware of feral hogs on the indiangrass section in the AM

Great place for a quick hike. Trails are in great condition and even better views.

Beautiful trail, and pretty remote feeling... and serene! Making a big loop out of all the trails at Doeskin Ranch is great, and I suggest planning on 1.5 - 2.5 hours for that, if you plan to “stop and smell the roses” at all. Recommended!

Peaceful but very rocky. All of these trails can be managed in tennis shoes but I’d at least recommend some trail runners. Lovely and shady with beautiful views at the end of Ridgeline and along Vista Knoll. Traffic noise can be heard occasionally but for the most part it feels remote for being pretty close to civilization.

Beautiful hike on an overcast spring day! Lots of wildflowers. I took my 3 kids (just turned 4, 8, and 10) and we made the loop through the rimrock & indiangrass trails for a little over 4 miles. Steep areas were very manageable for my kids.

This trail isn’t easy, the first half mile is switch backs and rocky. Once you reach the top it’s pretty smooth sailing the rest of the way. Trail is more like 3 miles. Beautiful flowers everywhere in April. Lots of lovely limestone too. Challenging and fun.

Nice hike good combo of grasslands and rock terrain. Saw one coral snake near off path at creek. Go when overcast or cool. Pretty open terrain for half of hike.

Had a nice time with my 3 and 6 year old boys on this trail. I had some snacks and water with us so they would survive the entire way. We went clockwise around the loop which I was grateful for because the other side of the trail has several switchbacks and I think going clockwise probably kept the trail more entertaining for the kids though they probably wouldn’t know it. There are some nice views of the hill country at the top and, like almost all hikes, the pictures don’t really do it justice
