South Cumberland State Park sits across 30,845 acres and within four different counties: Grundy, Franklin, Marion, and Sequatchie. It has nine separate areas and has one of the best backcountry hiking regions. Rated as one of the top 25 backcountry trails, the Fiery Gizzard Trail is a point-to-point trail that connects Grundy Forest to Foster Falls. There is a lot to experience, including: waterfalls, rocky gorges and overlooks. The Savage Gulf and Stone Door area has about 55 miles of hiking to amazing vistas and impressive cliff lines. Carter Natural Area is part of the Lost Cove - an 18,000-acre enclosed valley is another feature of this area. Make sure to also see the Sewanee Natural Bridge which is a sandstone arch overlooking the Lost Cove. Grundy Lakes offers a day use area where visitors can swim, picnic, fish, and hike. Make sure to also stop by the Visitors Center to see the interpretive exhibits and read more information about the South Cumberland State Park. There is a recreation area and equipment for rent from the front desk. The park has four picnic pavilions and other small picnic areas with grills around the park. There is camping and backcountry camping in South Cumberland - these are all primitive camping sites. Reservations are required. South Cumberland State Park is sure to appease your outdoor adventure!
