Description

The Pickett State Park sits within the 19,200 acres of the Pickett State Forest. Adjacent to the park is 120,000-acres of the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. The Stearns Coal and Lumber Company donated almost 12,000 acres of land to the state in 1933 to be used as a forest recreational area. The park still has some of the initial buildings built on the land qualifying it for the National Register of Historic Places. Sitting in a remote section of the Cumberland Plateau, Pickett CCC Memorial State Park is known for its wilderness country, natural sandstone bridges, scenic bluffs, and flowing mountain streams. During the spring, visitors can expect to see an abundance of wildflowers including blackberries and blueberries. The park museum features various interpretive exhibits and artifacts. For those wishing to visit and stay overnight, there are cabins and campsites available with electric and water hookups. There are also picnic tables and grills. More than 58 miles of hiking trails wind through the wilderness of the park and forest and they vary in difficulty. The more adventurous hikers can apply for a backcountry camping permit. The park earned the Silver-tier International Dark Sky Park designation which means that visitors can enjoy rich views of the night sky similar to those found in many of the Western states.
