This was the first big trail I took my kids on, and it was more tough than I expected. We started at noon and had a great and challenging time! We ended up getting behind a group of about twenty folks and it was a blast once we all reached the tower. Excellent challenge with great scenery, and good areas to cool down on. I will say the trail changeover at the access road was hard to see today and we ended up having to backtrack a quarter mile or so, but even so it was a great time.

Great trail and views up at the top. The foliage is beautiful this time of year.

Challenging parts but worth it at the top of the tower.

It was confusing left right down up of track. :\ My feet were VERY,VERY sore! But the dam is cool. Bug were flying into my face it was annoying. It was very dark. With fun it would be a 3. The bad: 3. It was like a 2 hour walk or bike. The dogs made a little worse.

Trail is very well-maintained, however it is clearly catered mostly to Mountain Bikers. We found ourselves frequently dodging mountain bikers on this trail. Otherwise the trail was relatively flat and easy to hike. Would recommend with small children or animals. Not strenuous. Definitely classify this as easy and not moderate. We also stopped to look at the animals before hiking and found it quite sad. Aquatic/reptile section was nearly non-existent and the tanks still running were filthy. Birds had very small enclosures with no room to fly. Did not see any otters (the otter pond was filthy as well, perhaps that exhibit has been closed for a while). All around very depressing.

Pros: A truly beautiful and breathtaking sight from a top the fire tower. The trail is marked very well and there are several ways to get to the fire tower trail that you can use depending on what you want to see. Cons: The last ~.6mi to the fire tower was rough and very steep. A few parts of the trail were eroded or covered in water in one place. I would go on a weekday instead of the weekend as the trail was decently busy on a Saturday. The tower itself is very very rickety with boards you have to skip and tread on very lightly. The first flight of stairs sways when you’re climbing up and if you can make it past that the view is beautiful

Nice hike that builds in climb towards the end. Park opening is the best time to avoid crowds clambering up and down the tower.

This is an enjoyable day hike along well-maintained trails. The views of the Kingsport Reservoir are nice when you start the hike clock-wise, and then you gradually turn away from the reservoir and hike into the hills for the remainder of the trail. This trail gets you away from the crowds at Bays Mountain and has a feeling of solitude. When I hiked, it seemed like this particular route was frequented by only MTBers, so be aware of any bikes that might approach on the trail. Overall, great trail!

Loved seeing the fire tower. The hike was a bit long but not steep until the end. The fire tower was old and not well maintained but I still climbed it. Too much fog the day I went to have a good view but I’d love to go back on a clear day.

The fire tower is a good payoff to a grueling trail. It's definitely old, and not for anyone with a fear of heights, but really exhilarating to climb. The trails in this park have very compacted soil so they're very hard under your feet- almost like pavement. Wear supportive shoes. We almost turned back several times when going up the last mile because it was so steep.

Tough but so worth it.

worth the hike... beautiful view from the tower...

Unless you plan on climbing up the tower there is not great views at the top. Most is blocked by trees. The hike up is not very scenic either. Much better options in the park.

Nice easy trail at parts, and hilly on the North side. Went to the fire tower and it was able to be scaled easily. Definitely has the best view! Really pretty and friendly place

Hike is decently long, but not difficult until the end when actually reaching the fire tower. I gave 3 stars because the fire tower is in sketchy condition. It was a disappointment to get to the top then to be scared at actually going up it to see the views. There is a longer loop I accidentally took and ended up being exhausted. Trail is not marked the best so be careful with that as well.

Not a favorite for me but it's still nice. Trail is steep in parts. I didn't climb the tower. But, did have a deer follow us on trail for bout a mile.

This is a beautiful park. Fall provides a backdrop of terrific color against the lake. This trail is easy and has a few floating bridges.

That fire tower is a scary one lol. Very old and unstable.

Fun trail with 5 year old.

An easy, family friendly hike. After all the rain, the trail was very muddy and slick in parts, but that did not greatly impact our hike. A great hike to get out and stretch your legs.

Almost a mountainous terrain. The trail, like most in the area is loosely maintained.Conditions very from good to poor depending on the seasons.

Hike to fire tower gets your heart pumping but great place to go!

My family loves this place. Plenty to do and see just enjoying the beauty of nature. Plenty of hiking and walking trails. Adventure course and animals to watch!

This trail starts off easy. You'll start on the lakeside trail and you'll eventually find the marker to this trail. its tricky in the fall as you can easily get off trail and find yourself climbing even steeper than the normal trail. All the leaves (to me) on the ground got me mixed up going up. going down it was straight forward. in the end it is worth the hike as you can not beat these views. Be mindful of others coming up or down. The steps dont allow much room for 2 people. they are steep too.
