Great hike today! Views from the top are fantastic!

Amazing hike! Challenging when you are not a regular hiker but well worth the view at the top and the sense of accomplishment at the end. And we got to see a mountain goat at the top! What an awesome reward!

Beautiful trail!

Beautiful trail! Love being able to walk down near the creek. If you're up for it, Dalton Lake is just a mile or so past the end of the trail.

more of a moderate loop network of wide dirt/grass trails thru pasture and tall pine stands. good for the novice as footing is good and climbs aren't that steep. loops allow you to add on muiles if you want ant trailhead just about 8 miles from Spearfish.

One of the longer hikes I've done in the hills. Took a little longer than an hour to get to the summit. Great view at the top.

Great trail! Amazing views. I have hiked several trails and this one ranks up there as a must see. 6yr old and Cockapoo dog had no problems.

A lot of fallen trees that block the trail. You can climb over them but these just make it more challenging. Beautiful scenery but no wildlife today

Great hike. It took my dog and I 62 minutes to reach the summit, walking at a brisk pace. About 2.4 miles up there's some treefall that you have to climb over/around, but other than that the trail conditions are perfect.

Amazing hike!! Definitely recommend it!!gorgeous views!!

Nice for the family

Great hike but the sign at the head of the trail states this trail is 3.5 Miles to the top making it 7 Miles total. Small amount of snow and 66 degrees. Amazing hike.

A beautiful loop hike, #9 was the better of the two parts (#4). There is still a decent amount of slush on the northern facing bits so bring good treaded boots and poles presently but baring snow this'll be ok in a few weeks. The scenery is wonderful the whole way, lots of good views, we docked a star as the signs are not great and certain forks are confusing so prep a bit...happy to do this out of season, and midweek as I imagine especially #4 will feel narrow during peak..

One of my favorite little hikes to get some fresh air and take in the views!

Decently hard trail. Most of it is straight up hill and there is a lot of trees blocking some views but still pretty amazing scenery.

We tried to go up for a sunrise hike yesterday (April 21, 2018) but we didn’t expect it to take so long to get up there. It is 3.29 miles from car to Peak, according to my Apple Watch. If you are in good shape this is still a relatively hard hike. It is straight uphill hike. It has beautiful views and the trail is well established. We are in really good shape and it took us about an hour and half non-stop to get to the top.

Also please remember to keep your dogs on leashes. If your dog is well behaved some people are still scared of dogs. And you do not know how other dogs react to your dog.

We just hiked trail #9 from Sylvan Lake to Black Elk Peak. The trail was snow-covered and muddy, in parts, which made it more difficult than expected. The views at the top were amazing! My husband found a perfect spot to camp for the night, about a half mile down from the peak. Overall, a great hike, but fairly difficult with our 25 lb packs.

Minimal snow/ice patches at the bottom with obvious trails. Towards the top there were a few areas with more snow but overall a great hike with amazing views!

Snow depth was amazing. NOAA stated 40"-50", I would say closer to 30"! Still a beautiful and moderately strenuous snowshoe adventure. My nephew tagged along, but doesn't own snowshoes and struggled the entire time. Plenty of great looping/crossing trails that are reasonably marked but as a first time visitor to the area, they come up a bit short. Found myself relying heavily on GPS. I suspect these trails to be much more easy to navigate without snow cover but then we wouldn't be snowshoeing. Due to the low number of reviews/photos, I did not have a high expectation for the area. However, it exceeded my expectations in accessibility and beauty. I would definitely snowshoe or hike this area again.

Epic views at the top. Tough hike when there is snow on the ground but well worth it. Dog friendly.

Beautiful views along the entire trail from Sylvan Lake to Black Elk Peak then onto Little Devil's Tower. The trail is relatively difficult, but most people could complete it with plenty of water and time for breaks. Definitely my favorite trail in South Dakota.
