this trail is rated easy. I thought it was and actually wanted to run some of the inclines, maybe next time. my girlfriend thought it could have been listed as moderate. either way, I enjoyed the hike. first time using app. trail was ten minutes away, perfect. the trail itself is NOT the Buck Trail alone. when you start, you are in Chrome Trail, then at the first connecting trail, the Doe Trail, we chose to continue straight. trail not clearly marked, but we found our way to the Buck Trail without even realizing. ups and downs were perfect to get heart rate up. the next intersection is with the Feldspar Trail. the Buck Trail continues on, but is not as clear as trail we were on, so we chose the Feldspar Trail. it was more open just as the trail we had been on. we took Feldspar Trail to Doe Trail and it took us back to Chrome/Doe intersection. we took Chrome Trail back to start where we parked. so again, the app shows the Buck Trail, when actually we were on Chrome, Doe, Buck, Feldspar, Doe, then Chrome. it was close to 90 degrees with little shade, but again, I enjoyed it. the app wants payment for the GPS tracking but we used Map My Run and it was free.

Wide trail, well-maintained. Poor pine trees have been annihilated. Rocky terrain, little shade, great up-and-down geography. Not well marked but there are signposts and arrows on trees at some locations.

May 31, 2019. We liked this trail because it is a little different. The weather was great and many of the wildflowers are in bloom this time of year. However, as mentioned in a previous review, there is a lot of walking in the open so be prepared for the direct sun. The negatives of this trail for me are all related to poor labeling. Blaze marks are almost nonexistent. The transition to the Buck trail from the Doe in the southeast corner of the park is not identified. Anyone already on the Buck trail and traveling through this point would have the same problem. It could be that the directional post was removed because of area work going on due to the pine beetle damage, but I don't know. This was the only location that we came across that had a complete lack of guidance. Fortunately the path of the trails as shown in Google Maps are exact so it was easy to retrace our steps using the map and gps in order to identify the turnoff. Even after identifying the location of the change in direction, the path of the trail was not visually obvious until we started in that direction. If this is your first time in this park, I highly recommend that you have a copy of the park map and a way of confirming location via gps (e.g., smart phone). FYI, I have a Garmin hiking gps unit and the park trails do not show up on the map.

This was a nice little hike, did it with my 4 kids (ages 5-11). A warning though, there is very little shade along the path, so be prepared for a lot of sun.

Went hiking here recently with my older parents and our two dogs. The sign by the lake (where the portajohn and parking lot is) says it’s closed because of hunting. Now, we went on Sunday and hiked it because you can’t hunt in PA on Sundays. Anyways, there’s a cool quarry that’s fenced off but you can hike around it and get a good view. Some parts along the hill hiking up were icy but not bad at all. The trail comes up from the lake parking lot to the hilltop then down on the other side of the lake and to a cool historic Ore Concentrator Ruin area and back to the lake. Great hike for all ages!

I've been coming here for 25 years and the Buck trail is always a wonderful place to be. Very little traffic and pretty good hills and variety along the path. Beautiful serpentine rock areas to see.

The park has been infested by a pine-bark beetle which has killed hundreds of trees. The park is in the process of logging the dead trees to contain the spread of the beetle. Due to the ongoing logging, the the Doe Trail is closed until around August. Only trails near McPherson Lake are open.

Nice forest trails with varying degrees of steepness. Not much in the way of unique landmarks other than he feldspar quarry but still a great way to escape into nature for a couple hours.

We had a great time walking around the trails with our dog. It was nice that she didn't have to be on a leash. This was my wife's first time hiking and she did pretty good.

Loved this park, I connected multiple trails to make a loop. No crowds at all. I saw tons of wildlife while hiking the trails.

Gets the heart rate up for some fast walking. Very uneven though, ruts and loose gravel make it not great for a high powered fitness walk. But is nice for an fast calorie burning walk.

I took the trail from west to east, starting in the forested section. Shortly in there is a steep climb and there is a lot of up and down along this trail. Most of the trail is gravel or exposed bedrock but in some places I was glad to have my boots and not just sneakers. Not much shade even in the forested section, so don't forget your hat.

Great park, large well kept serpentine barrens, like going to a different state, completely different from the rest of PA. The trails in the barrens have ZERO shade so I recommend spring and fall. Rolling hills, grasses and a few trees. if you are not familiar I would read up a little one this unique ecosystem before you go, you will appreciate it more.

Nice never seen it crowded. Great place for geocaching. hope you enjoy, maybe well see you there, if you do you could hide and let my dogs track you down. haha
