Step out of your vehicle and into a place with natural beauty that truly inspires. Just a quarter mile from any of the parking areas to the beach, yet the rigors of everyday life are stripped away by the time your feet hit the sand. Although the walk is short, there are several different trails to the beach and lead you to the Cape Falcon overlook or to the Oregon Coast Trail. Be sure to pick up a map on the way into the park. All of the trails to the beach are through a mature forest; one trail follows the winding path of the Short Sands creek. This trail gives way to the spectacular view of the ocean and the creek meeting. This is your first glimpse of the ocean and Short Sands beach. The beach is nestled in a cove that provides you with a feeling of total privacy. Popular with surfboarders and boogie boarders, the beach is always alive with activity. Surrounded by the mountains, the beach at Oswald West gives you a sense of being transported away from the trials of everyday life. Lose yourself; find Oswald West State Park.

Great trail although very muddy right now. Beautiful views of the ocean most of the way. A few people hiking but not overly crowded for a sunny Sunday!

Love this trail. Short easy hike to the beach (cove). Great for the whole family. Some new downed trees due to the rain and wind so be aware and really watch the tide - ocean was angry today.

As expected the trail is insanely muddy. It’s absolutely beautiful. I forgot to record the first half mile so my recording is off. Highly recommend. Easy trail. Has an option to go down to the beach.

Didn’t follow the ocean as much as we had hoped but nice little stretch of beach at the end!

Went mid December, very muddy sections with standing water and deep mud. Low elevation gain, easy to walk, perfect for beginners or the experienced hiker looking for incredible views.

So much mud!!! I made it in tennis shoes but boots are recommended

Don’t go here for hiking. Period. Unless you like to hike through the equivalent of a Walmart parking lot, just to see half of Portland at the destination. Great surf spot though and really a pretty cool little walk to view old tree stumps, and people on vacation. Oh and people walk in groups of 10 and don’t move when you pass, so bring an air horn.

Great hike. Brings you out at Short Sands. You can connect to Falcon Cove Trail from there. Lots of tree roots.

great trail. easy hike but with many roots as mentioned by others. also pretty muddy when we did it in november which is also reported by other reviewers. I would like to comment that there are many giant old growth trees on this route that are worth seeing themselves along the way. views at the cape itself are spectacular. some small groves of trees on the bluff overlooking the ocean are good to watch large waves generated from storms crash onto the offshore rocks etc.

Nothing particularly noteworthy. Well established, forested trail with a steady climb to a underwhelming viewpoint.

Let me begin by saying that there is a very good reason for this being a Moderate 3-mile hike. It is incredibly steep in some areas. Alternatively to the out-and-back recommendation, some in your hiking party can get dropped at one end and picked up at the parking lot for short sand beach. If it weren't obvious by now, this is not for the faint of heart. I recommend coming in with a game plan before hiking this trail.
