Hiking

the directions to this trail are crap- hopefully this helps- from the town of Cave Junction, Or, travel east on highway 46 (Caves Hwy) approx 17 miles. Turn right at Caves Creek Campground. Trailhead is located next to the camp host site at the up stream side of the campground, and may not be well marked. if Cave Creek Campground is closed, you will have to park in the pullout area near the entrance gate and hike down to the campground, approx 1/3mile. the hike from Cave Creek Campground to the Oregon Caves Chateau is approximately 2 miles, and is very steep in places. I would consider this a "difficult" trail for the average person, moderate for experienced hikers. elevation gain is steep, ending at 4,000'. Trail can be hiked up-and-back, or one way either direction utilizing a shuttle vehicle. Most of the trail follows and criss-crosses the creek, so water is available so summer long. travel alternates through streamside riparian habitat to dry Douglas fir stands. Some poison oak may be encountered along the trail. The stream is home to many fish, frogs, and salamanders. of special note on this trail- in 1964 there was a major snowfall backed by a warm front and heavy rain. The steep terrain created a flood situation which caused major damage to the historical buildings at the Oregon Caves National Monument. The flood of water continued down the Cave Creek drainage, leaving evidence of damage. As you hike along, notice how all the trees within a certain distance of the stream bed are all similar size- regrowth after the flood. You can also see evidence of the flood on the larger trees further from the stream bed. Look on the uphill side and you will see many have large dead and damaged areas from the battering they took from the water washed deadwood and rocks.

Couldn’t stay on the red path because...well, it wasn’t there. Some of it is closed, of course, because of COVID-19-but still with the visit. The view at the top is stunning and like nothing else I’ve ever known before. Wow! I can’t wait to go back!

It’s a cool trail, but I didn’t find it matching with AllTrails AT ALL! How frustrating. Also, take the dead end to see the waterfall, you’ll only see it from a great distance of you don’t.

Short, easy hike- some elevation gain but not bad! Rewarding view at the top. Perfect trail to take back to the visitor's center after the cave tour.

Great trail! It’s definitely moderate. Great views in some spots and tree is awesome! I came on customer appreciation day so cave tours were free!

I loved this trail. It's a beautiful hike down to the creek and small waterfalls. Enjoy the Oregon Caves and this trail in a day.

This is a great trail. I would rate it as moderate. There is still quite a few wildflowers. The view from the top was amazing. I could clearly see Mt. Shasta. I would rate the trail for most hikers.

I hiked counter clockwise from the Château parking lot. The trail to go towards Cave Creek was closed due to Port Orford root disease, whatever that is, so completed the No-Name loop. Trail is in good condition - all downhill on the front and all-up hill at the end. Nice tall conifers and mixed forest. Follows a creek for about 1/3 of the way.

Beautiful steep hike. Several trails available up here, so well worth the drive.

Grand views including Mt Shasta, Bear Ears, Illinois Valley - much more. Vistas of large mountain meadows with Lake Bigelo... Saw more than a dozen different beautiful varieties of flowers in bloom (our hike was mid July). Wonderful.

Great Day for this hike. No other people on the trail. Very calm and peaceful. We hiked it from the sign posted when you first drive in to the parking lot and ended at the monument building. You do have to walk down the dead end parts of the trail to see the waterfalls. Beautiful.

I didn’t see anyone else on the trail, and it took me 2.5 hours to complete. I am not very fit, and there were parts of the trail I had to pause for a few mins to catch my breath. While I was there I also did the cave tour, which was worth the time and 10 bucks. At the Big Tree there is a nice vista and area to stop and picnic. I plan on coming back when I have out of town guests for the cave tour and some of the other hiking trails that fan out from the visitor center.

Good trail. It’s pretty well marked. Snow was still covering the trail so we had to turn back at the creek. Would like to do again in the summer.

This is an excellent hike to do in the rain. I've hiked this trail on multiple occasions 10-15 years ago, and it was a nice little side trip for after the Cave tour is finished.

the hike was nice and short with pretty views and it's far from town which makes it more peaceful. signage around the trails we're vague and a little confusing when you get towards the end but easy enough

Nice and somewhat short hike. Go down the dead ends to see the waterfall or stream. Took about 20 mins. Stays cool on hot days.

A really good trail to hike. Moderate is a fair assessment, especially if you pick it up in the first parking lot where the picnic area is.

Enjoyable little trek that was a bit confusing when you walk back out to the Oregon caves and back out the road. The parking lot was FULL of kids. And I thought it was going to be quiet and peaceful...

I found this on on a bulletin board in the parking lot of Oregon caves. I went there to do several trails but there were 100+ kids coming off busses in the area so I went and did this on the way out. A nice gentle hill out and back...

After going through the caves we went on this trail back to the visitor center rather than the direct path. It was a very easy and pretty hike. I would recommend doing this after the caves.

This was a very easy trail. I went on it after going through the caves and still wasn’t tired after. It had some nice views. The hardest part was going up the hill near the end, but it wasn’t that bad.

Beautiful and peaceful. No one was on the trail. We were walking along through the forest and it began to snow huge wet snowflakes. As you looked across the way to the fir trees, it was a beautiful sight with the snow coming down.
