Very sandy soil with few short trees. Flat trail, easy hike. On a chilly and foggy october day I did not meet a soul.

Beautiful, lightly trafficked trail that was perfect for a fall day. Mostly sand trail that travels through a canyon that narrows the further you go in. Due to time restraints, I was not able to go all the way in and back, but enjoyed every minute of the part I hiked. Lots of old juniper, large rocks and brush.
If ever I am in the area again, I will definitely hike this trail again.

Easy, flat hike. The desert aesthetic is unique, and the rocks are fun to climb. you can get some great views from the top if the weather's clear.

Always an awesome trail!!

The hike follows an old road/Jeep trail. As you hike through old junipers you are serenaded by the lovely sound of traffic from Highway 20. Not sure how this came to be designated wilderness? It has definitely been trammeled by man. Not much in the solitude department here either. Please pick up your doggie waste bags. Leaving trash behind in the form of dog feces in plastic bags is a good way to get dogs banished from a trail system our furry friends enjoy as much as we do!

Perfect winter hike. I don’t think I want to do it during summer! Gorgeous juniper trees, and wide open spaces. I will do this again.

Pretty cool trail winding through the canyon. Lots of weird rock art if you look for the carvings. The trail was kinda spooky in spots with all the old juniper and how quiet it was. Sandy soft soil most of the way, cool rough road getting in. Went Friday and didn’t see anyone else. Went again Saturday and there were tons of people there. Ignore the map on this page. You access the trailhead from HWY 20 by the badlands rock trailhead.

I did a 12 ish mile loop today plus a 1 mile detour off the loop due to poor signage. Overall a nice outing for a winter hike.

Peaceful, simple, beautiful. What else do you need in a hike! Be warned though- the waypoint for this map isn’t to the trailhead, it’s for the road to the trailhead- it’s kinda confusing!

Nice, pretty easy mellow dog friendly hike. When you pull off, hang right THROUGH the gravel pits, not past them to hit the trail head!

It’s a nice loop, nothing too challenging, but a nice stroll for late fall/early winter-

Easy to follow trail. No real change in scenery or elevation but a fun little ~3 mile loop

easy hike that snakes thru a dry canyon. good but not spectacular. The trailhead sign lists it at 6 miles but most people turn around at the rock scramble

rather undescript. The junipers are very old even though they aren't huge. If you know where to go off trail in the badlands you can find some pictographs however.

This trail gives you a real taste of the central Oregon dessert. Mostly level and sand to take home in your shoes

Take water. This is the desert. Great area for hiking or mtn biking. As you are going east on HWY 20 from Bend, the parking lot is at mile marker 16 - not a lot of signage. On a clear day - beautiful views of the Cascades. Great desert flowers at the right times.

Breathtaking, beautiful trail for all levels. Rock-hopping optional. Natural geological formations, ancient Juniper trees, incredible views, unique wildlife (Mountain Goats). During winter months the trail is EXTREMELY ICY. Remember to be respectful of private property close by. Recommended for everyone!

The Flatiron loop trail in Oregon Badlands Wilderness offers subtle attractions. Lava flows, bright, small flowers (in season), tall junipers, and gradual changes in the microenvironment. Folks have wandered bit to explore the lava flows so make sure you don't lose your route.

This is one of my very favorite places. It's an easy hike, very flat desert land all the way out. The sand makes it feel like you are walking farther than you actually are though. The rock formations are cool, and you can do some bouldering and scrambling out there at various secret spots. I've always wanted to hike out and camp out there, but I haven't done it yet. This is my zen hike for sure. Also, it is EXTREMELY hot in the summer. There is hardly any shade..this is the DESERT. Bring lots of water and wear sunblock!

Flatiron rock loop is great, we really enjoyed this walk- not too much of a hike, no real elevation gain in this part. Bring plenty of water though as it is a desert and very dry/dusty in the summer especially. Beautiful and enjoyable.

We completed the Flatiron Rock trail yesterday morning. Beautiful sunny day with light wind. Perfect for a hike like this. Very little elevation change. Trail surface was soft sand most of the way. We spent time hanging out at Flatiron Rock taking photos. Scenery was amazing. We were able to see 10 mountain peaks in the distance.

See link below for additional trail information.
