Beautiful trail overlooking the basin. The colors were amazing. Kids enjoyed it too :)

The painted hills are more of a little walk/hike. The landscape is stunning and unlike anything I’ve ever seen. Definitely worth the drive! (August 2016)hik

Nice hike with beautiful views of the blue rock canyon. Highly suggest going left on the loop to start to build up to the better parts. We went left and saw some blue rock (not canyon yet) and were already excited. Then we got to the top of the loop and walked out on the overlook spur and were so happy we came that way. You just walk up to the beautiful blue rock canyon. Then we continued the loop taking pictures at many stops. Completing the outer loop we then did the inner canyon trail...which again we were excited we did in this order. A great way to cap it off. Trail was was in good shape and if you do in the late morning you have the light behind you for the canyon shots :)

A great hike for kids and adults

A thing of beauty

Short, easy but very pretty red rocks. Worth the drive.

Short but sweet. Stop in at the sidewalk cafe in the small town of Mitchell and get a yummy milkshake while you are out there.

Très beau petit tour, offrant des superbes vues.

I wouldn't call the half mile walk a hike by any means but had the best view of the Hills of any I'd seen

For my money the white & blue canyons are more incredible than the nearby Painted Hills, if you have to pick between them. A more challenging hike here as well.

Absolutely breathtaking, some of it is on private (but accessible) land.

So beautiful! Totally recommend everyone to go here. If you are thinking of camping near John Day stay at Clyde Holliday State Park.

Neat place!!

More beautiful views and different angles

We did the shorter trail. We wanted to do the longer but forgot our rain coats. Amazing area. I would have loved to have done the longer trail. The green stream is fascinating!

Does not disappoint

Short trail. Really interesting area! Just a few feet into the trail and you step into a prehistoric jurassic time surrounded by fossils and turquoise rocks.

Very short trail along the south flank of Red Star Knoll.

Be aware that there are 2 trails. The longer one is a bit over 3 miles. The sign suggests 3 hours to do this, don't be fooled. At a gentle jogging pace with stops for photos this took 45 minutes. Not much wildlife but interesting colors. Collecting is not allowed. Easy to find and to park on a Saturday in November.

go for the view... simply amazing. not hard whatsoever - they scaled the climbing into moderate increases in elevation. just bring water and a good protein bar.

IF you're looking for a hike, the Carroll Rim Trail (also on AllTrails) is for you. The rest are several loops found on a gravel road. The scenery was breath taking and worth the driving to get to the unit. Highly Recommended.
