Explore the most popular trails in Fort Stevens State Park with hand-curated trail maps and driving directions as well as detailed reviews and photos from hikers, campers and nature lovers like you.

Fort Stevens was the primary military defense installation in the three fort Harbor Defense System at the mouth of the Columbia River (Forts Canby and Columbia in Washington were the other two). The fort served for 84 years, beginning with the Civil War and closing at the end of World War II. Today, Fort Stevens has grown into a 3,700 acre park offering exploration of history, nature, and recreational opportunities. And you can help fund historic programs and restoration at the park! The Friends of Old Fort Stevens will run Wood on Wheels this summer, selling and delivering firewood right to your site. Check it out when you arrive! Camping, beachcombing, freshwater lake swimming, trails, wildlife viewing, an historic shipwreck and an historic military area make Fort Stevens a uniquely diversified park. A network of nine miles of bicycle trails and six miles of hiking trails allow you to explore the park through spruce and hemlock forests, wetlands, dunes, and shore pine. Coffenbury Lake has two swimming areas, a picnic area, restrooms, and a boat ramp (10 mph boating speed limit). Two other smaller lakes offer boat ramps for fishing and canoeing. Throughout the year, you can browse through displays dating back to the Civil War at the museum, visit the only enclosed Civil War earthworks site on the west coast, and explore the gun batteries. During the summer, watch the blacksmiths work, tour a rare 90-year old underground gun battery that served as a World War II command center, and take a truck tour of the fortifications spanning the Spanish-American War and World War II (tour available at a nominal charge).

We saw two elk on the trail not scared of us at all had to around and cut back onto the trail. The kids loved it!

Not really a hike. A short walk from the parking lot to the wreck. Cool black sand though and nice beach area.

Fun walk. Not too far from the battery.

Well maintain trail with a little bit of history. Also have good paved path for bike rides.

Really enjoyed this short easy trail. Mostly flat w beautiful views, lots of shade. Air crisp and clean. Passed about 10 other people, about half had dogs. 5 stars for easy and beautiful

Super easy beach walk that was beautiful at sunset.

This hike is a bike path. It’s entirely paved with no views of the ocean. Might be good for the family, but we found it quite boring.

Beautiful and easy! Birds

Nice easy trail but can get muddy. We went on a winter day but it hadn't rained in a few days so we had minimal mud. bathrooms at two different day use spots. It's good for dogs too but the lake comes right up to the trail in many spots so if you have a water loving dog, good luck keeping him dry!

Leisure hike around a lake! You have to pay $5 to park to be able to hike around the lake, but worth it!

One for the family!

Short and sweet. It’s an easy little walk around the lake. 2 mile loop.

Just what you think you’ll get. Pictures are accurate.

This scenic wooded coastal wetland tail has a dash of historical backdrop which makes the Fort Stevens State Park trail an excellent and nostalgic destination.

Not really a hike. You park off the beach to go on it then walk like .1 miles to the shipwreck, which is a neat feature. The beach itself is very nice too.
