I hiked this back in 2012, and the trail has completely changed. It was very fascinating observing the wildfire damage back in 2017. The trail was in good condition however defiance trail #413 has about 40 downed logs to scurry over as well as very slippery dirt and gravel on the way back down. I would not hike this trail again just because of that. The view at the top was just as beautiful as I thought it would be!!

WalkingGreat!

Only observation area open but stunning views! We didn’t need a reso even though it says you do. They Had a place for a line on Labor Day but we got there early (8:30am) and were able to walk right up! Beautiful!

Restaurant/Gift Shop open. Website says trail open to the lower observation area by RESERVATION ONLY. However, there is a walk up line as well. Maybe a Labor Day weekend exception? Spent 30 minutes in line starting at the snack bar.

Great views! Tough going and very rocky. If you‘we klutzy like me, you had to stop to enjoy the views because otherwise you end up stubbing your toe or tripping. In September, there was no water to be seen in the creek. Also, the path it shows if you’re recording is very inaccurate and confusing.

HikingGreat!

This was a great trail! It’s definitely a leg shredder (both on the way up and the way down), but the views are worth it. We did it as an out-and-back due to construction. You pass a few waterfalls at the very beginning and then wind through some meadows before entering the forest. Be aware on your way down- the steep section towards the bottom is very dusty and slippery. Took us about 7.5 hours, including 45 minutes at the top. There’s a cold creek about 20 feet past the parking lot- great for your feet and legs at the end of a big day.

Loved it! It offered a really good workout with amazing views at the end. Great spot at the top to picnic or over night? :) would definitely do this one again.

HikingFeeGreat!

Definitely a tough one! But worth it for sure. Most of the trail takes you through a beautiful forest only to reveal the top of the mountain and views near the end. I took the 'More difficult' route up and the 'Difficult' route back down. VERY windy up top. Should probably bring a windbreaker.

Definitely steep up the mountain. Take your time. It’s a leg burner but it’s 100% worth it!
