We did section 2 starting from Winding Stair Trailhead. We went 3 miles out and back. Nice trail though not many views (don't you hate when trees block your view of nature!). There is a shelter near peak which if great for lunch. Mostly shady which is good in July.

Good moderate hike but you have minimal views. It is heavily overgrown on the NW side of Snake Mountain (I suspect the previous poster has east/west reversed). The camp ground is closed due to the pandemic so we parked at the lot at the end of Cedar Lake Rd. There was no way to find the trail head and we had to off road it using GPS and the All trails map to join up with the trail. Same when we came back - even on the trail we just lost it near the camp ground. East side was fine. After stopping at Horsethief springs we passed the Coldville Divide and head back - that is when we really lost the trail and needed a machete (and long pants - lots of prickers and sharp leaves, our legs were pretty bloody after). Had to use 30 years of experience to maintain the trail and continue to find the blazes. I think the mileage is wrong. The US Forest Service map says 11.2, the All Trails says 13.9 and we clocked it at 14 - but we also cut off a significant part of the red All trails map in the NW quadrant. I would guess that route is about 15 miles. The west side is also more in the sun. There are a few streams though most were dead dry in July. I had 2 ticks hitchhike on me.

At first we started on the east loop the “ scenic route” the trail is way over grown and we were lost for quite awhile then we found our way back to the west loop and it was perfectly fine. I would do it again but not the east loop this time

Not for the weak ankles! I can’t judge it as a whole as we only went 4 out and 4 back. Very steep climb up to 2.5 and a gradual decent before hitting 3.5 with a pretty steep drop. Very much overgrown. Very rocky but a great hike. If it wasn’t for the overgrown trail with hidden rocks, it would be a 5.

Parts of the trail make you wish you had trekking poles, parts make you wish you had a machete. The whole trail makes you wish you wore waterproof boots. Well marked outside of summiting Snake Mountain, lost the trail for a bit. Recommend downloading map layers before venturing off.

Moderate in/out, challenging scramble up/down Winding Stair. Missing trail markers at trailhead and easy to confuse trails with intersecting horse trails. GPS saved the day. Found some campsites along the way, but ended up making our own on second day. Quality water was scarce on western trail, but found a pond to filter that wasn’t horrible. We nicknamed Horse Thief Springs water “bloodwater” since it tasted like the iron pipe it was flowing from. More/better water sources on eastern trail. Lightly trafficked, only saw a handful of people on second day.

Really nice trails, we did it the weekend after Christmas so it was nice and quite. Storms had filled the creeks and having our choice of camping spots made for a great trip. The western section (the side with the scenic over look) is tough going but good trail. Storm damage has make keeping up with the trail difficult at best in some areas (downloading the map and using gps helped us see when we got off trail). I see the areas people were complaining about the brambles in areas- wasn’t bad end of December. Really nice over looks on the western section as well. Great trail!

I hiked section 1 (talimena state park to winding stair) in three days, utilizing the shelters, doing 9ish miles per day. Days 1 & 2 were rough with a full pack on - rocky, lots of elevation gain and loss. This is big country, folks! Lots of beautiful vistas, interesting wildlife. While the fall colors didn’t really pop this fall, beware of the nuts and other trail accessories that come with fall weather - it easy to roll an ankle out there right now. Take your time and enjoy this section - it’s really beautiful! The Holson valley shelter area is especially lovely. The trail is in good shape with only a couple of spots overgrown in between Rock Garden and Holson Valley shelters. Be sure to stop and fill up all water collectors before Holson - horsethief spring is a 3-mile hike away and you will need the water if overnighting at Holson. You can also cache water from the highway right above the shelter. Enjoy!

Did the first 19 miles between Talimena state park and Horsethief spring. The first 8 miles are well marked and easy to follow. the trail from deadman's gap to Horsethief is more overgrown with a lot of downed trees to navigate over. In some places the trail is indiscernible due to downed trees. Very challenging but fun section.

This trail should be rated as difficult due to the rocks and overgrown vines that grab your feet and poles mercilessly! I really wish we had chosen a different trail for our first backpacking trip.
