The trail is a great way to experience the park. I did this on a 100 degree day in July, but the actual hike was not that challenging, providing you bring enough water. The biggest challenges were the flies and frequent crossings of a muddy creek.

Got my hopes up for this trail to see beautiful painted colors canyon. I was not impressed. I've seen better ones in other parks down in Arizona and Nevada. The trail was also steep and everything just seemed pretty dull. Maybe it was the wrong season for it? Who knows

Breathtaking and dusty! A perfect diversion from the drive on I-94. The entrance to the park is also a highway rest stop.

It's not much of a hike because one can drive to the top of Buck Hill, but the views are sweeping and the wind whips across the badlands. The sensations are amazing. You'll likely have the hill to yourself.

We had a great hike here over the Labor Day long weekend. The badlands rock formations are wonderful and we had the opportunity to see a lot of wildlife including Bison, Prairie Dogs and even a rattle snake. The first mile or so of this track (starting near the park entrance) is a bit narrower and steeper than we expected. I would suggest long pants because the undergrowth is quite prickly.

Awesome trail. Took me about 10.5 hrs to complete. Very little water in the late season.

Beautiful in its own way. Mostly arid and Little shade. Close up buffaloes and also a coyote. Lots of prairie dog villages.

Great challenge with amazing views.

This was excellent! I really enjoyed it and the solitude that was available. I went at 5pm or so, so there were not too many people. Great vistas.

This trail was hot, exposed and did not really reveal anything that cannot be seen from the overlook at the rest stop. I enjoy when there are reveals within a hike to new vistas. On this hike, you go down a ways only to come back to where you started without seeing much new. It was certainly good workout though.

Someone should update the map, it starts down in Amidon, 144 miles long total for the whole.

Great for sunrise

The rest area and welcome center offer spectacular views with several options for hiking, whether you want to take a short walk into the painted canyon or you want to explore Teddy Roosevelt National Park in greater depth. The western access point offers the short loop to wet your appetite, while the eastern access point takes you down the painted canyon trail into the greater national park. You can't go wrong with either option.

trail running

Defiantly a hard trail to run due to bison tracks making the trail really uneven but it's a great run if your looking for a challenge!

A really fun hike, and a good warm-up for longer and more intense hikes, but we went after a major rainstorm and the mud turned this from a pleasant walking trail into a moderately grueling hike. Neat scenery, and a memorable experience scrambling up slippery mud slopes, but fair warning if you go during/shortly after heavy rain: you will be FILTHY by the end.

This is a beautiful trail that winds through the Theodore Roosevelt National Park. It can be used for backcountry camping which is what I did. I saw wild horses, buffalo and 3 prairie dog towns. If you are planning to backcountry camp on this trail heed my warning. There are many stream crossings throughout this trail. The water can not be filtered because it contains bentonite clay. It will ruin your filter. Bring the water you will need for your trip. Also heed this warning, make sure you pay close attention to the weather. My weekend had no rain in the forecast but a HUGE thunderstorm rolled through one evening. I woke up the next morning to find that the river crossings had risen to over my head. They don't call them the badlands for nothing people! It is a beautiful trail none the less!!

Easy, but steep hike up to the top of the hill. You definitely get some amazing views.

Simple, easy trail across a flat area. You get to walk through a prairie dog town, but they go into their holes when you walk through.

Great trail that is marked very well with lots of scenery. Didn't hike much of it but what I did I really enjoyed. I'll be going back for more that's for sure.

This trail was beyond my equipment and provisions. Physically, I could've walked the trail, however my judgement told me, I did't have the equipment required for such a trek. The outdoors requires a level of respect, and out hear anything can happen.

I enjoyed the photos, don't buy upgrades walk'em !

This was a nice warm up hike before i did some more hiking in the area. dropping in and coming out of the canyon wasn't hard at all. It didn't even seem like a 1.1 mile hike while doing it. It was awesome to see the different sediments up close, and being up close with nature with the interstate being right behind you.

Easy trail - but I have never seen anything like the landscape out here! It was amazing! Went early in the morning so a little cooler. Colors were incredible.

I completed the trail that ends at upper paddock trail. The climb up was pretty good and the climb back down was easy. Saw one big buffalo lounging in a dirt hole.

Buckhorn trail at Theodore Roosevelt National Park north unit was a great one day hike. It had a great mixture of hills, flats, and scenery. My favorite part was seeing a massive herd of bison on the plateau.

Great area to get away in. I actually combined 2 of the trails by going down one, then going off trail way out and connecting with the other to come back up to the parking lot. My recorded route got cut off for some reason but you can see the majority of where I went. You can just wander out here and still keep your bearings. Beautiful beautiful area. I'll be back.

Mountain biked part of this trail in 2005, then hiked other sections in 2007 or so. When raining the clayey, gumbo soil can be difficult to ride in. During dry weather, (or when the ground is frozen), it is easy riding and walking. Very hot and dry in the summer, so be prepared. It is the best marked trail I have ever been on, with two green wooden posts visible at most locations on the trail.
