Wind, water and sand... these components sculpted North Dakota's wildly rugged Little Missouri Breaks Country. Called "Mako Shika" or "where the land breaks" by the Sioux, these unusual land formations offer the state's most awe-inspiring scenery. Some of the most picturesque Badlands scenery can be found at Little Missouri State Park. Most of this primitive park is accessible only on foot or horseback.

This trail is recommended for those seeking a more, rugged, off-the-beaten path adventure and requires routefinding, sure-footedness on steep crumbling badlands, and bushwhacking in up to shoulder-high overgrowth. The loop strings together the park's I Trail, PS Trail, and T Trail for a a variety of badlands, grasslands, and woods. Most of the route is easy to medium difficulty, but there's one laughably steep descent along a crumbling badlands ridgeline (think STEEP dropoffs). Hikers who brave the ridge are rewarded with a jaw-dropping panoramic view of the badlands. Like other hikes in the area, this is tick country, and appropriate precautions are recommended.Show more
