First and foremost we loved the falls. Overall the hike wasn’t terrible but trail is very narrow in sections, or slick. A number of sections required to travel across roots or rocky sections that you had to take precaution on especially coming back. This is downhill there and uphill back. Added benefit is that there are 2 falls to visit. Each only a short distance from each other. Several age groups and physical conditioning were on the trail.

Beautiful trail!

well used trail. this is a rain forest and we got caught in a little but the summit was well worth the climb.

Awesome views! Just wish the actual top of the tower was accessible. It’s locked due to vandalism.

Great hike with our dog. My Garmin watch clocked the distance at 9.9 miles and it took us 6.5 hours including a lunch stop at the summit. West ridge loop portion is hardest. We went counter-clockwise which is a little easier than clockwise due to the rocky steep sections of west ridge loop...easier going down them than scrambling up. NOTE: a section of big piney loop is permanently closed as stated in other remarks so you do detour to little piney loop. It’s no big deal it just adds approx .8 mile extra distance. Also note that the trail end at little piney is almost a mile from the graybeard trailhead so you do end up going through a neighborhood as stated in someone else’s comments. All in all a good with a pretty waterfall and 3 great vista views along the way

Amazing views for minimal effort. Perfect place to watch the sunrise!

Awesome trail; however, if it starts raining, the trail becomes a creek. I enjoyed walking through the water and mud, but probably not for everyone. Hope to do it again soon.

Loved hiking this with my husband. We go every August (since we started dating). Love the time in the woods (keep an open mind you won't see many views.) The views are worth it. The top is touristy so we break eat lunch off the trail on our way down for privacy. It took us 3 hours to get up and 2 1/2 -3 to get down. :)

Holy uphill. This one was a little difficult.

Amazing day with my girlfriends

Great hike, very strenuous in the summer months. Bring poles as there are numerous wet sections with slippery rocks. Having two cars and parking one at the top of the mountain is nice and allows for a one way hike to the top.

The trail took me 2 hours 20 m. I enjoyed the Mullimax, Squirrel Gap & Pounding Milll sections, Quiet and more open forest compared to most trails in Pisgah Forest. Lots of bikers on the South Mill Rivers Road.

What a beautiful place for a hike and you have the option of seeing the upper and the lower waterfalls. Very well-traveled trails although some spots are very muddy, rocky, and narrow. Sometimes the trail can be a bit confusing as well so really pay attention to the signs. But it’s quite lovely there and a great work out, I would consider this to be an easy to moderate hike but be prepared for a lot of Rocky, rutty and muddy conditions. There is quite a bit of parking, as well as a restroom.

I only hiked 2 miles. Mostly flat to small incline trail in the woods with a beautiful creek near the beginning.

Strenuous, but acceptable. great views

First up, the drive in is off-road and on gravel. You will undergo some major switchbacks and curves while driving in the last 20-30 minutes until the trailhead. There’s no formal parking lot, so be prepared to park alongside the bushes. We hiked this loop counter clockwise which we thought was very easy and doable. In doing so, it was mostly downhill trekking with occasional creek crossings. My hiking group thought this trail was easy. No major challenges or fallouts during the hike. However, the waterfall that overlooks the top view has a huge opportunity for fun and potential danger. We slid down the water-covered-incline and found it was enjoyable (at first). Be wary! One of us ended up continuing down and off the edge where she flew off. She survived with minor flesh wounds. It was all fun and games until it happened. Otherwise, the trail was overgrown, not well-marked, simple and easy.
