rocky, steep climb. took the East Fork trail first (brutal) to the pinnacle trail and it was worth ever bit of effort! The views are amazing. Came back via West Fork trail. less brutal but VERY rocky with small loose rock. it's like a carpet or rolling death. lol The distance is longer than posted but my phone died and I started it a bit into the trail. Happy hiking!!

I will start with, the view at the end is pretty impressive... that’s putting it mildly. However, getting to it is an uphill climb that seemed to never end. There are no switchbacks and no views on the way to the pinnacle on the west route. We stayed overnight. The camp spot #3 is off the trail to the right as you’re going up... very very easy to miss. The sign is brown with white lettering and posted on a tree that is not right on the trail. This is not a hike for beginners unless you are glutton for punishment. The rocky floor on this trail is also unforgiving. You will roll your ankle if you’re not careful. It’s almost a guarantee to lose your footing at some point. I recommend you use some sort of ankle support. I don’t recommend overnight simply because of the extra weight going up. It’s hard enough alone but adding a pack for overnight will make it more difficult. There is plenty of water so you should be fine there, just bring the lightweight filter to filter your water. It is freezing cold right now but the view at the end is absolutely priceless to say the least. But be mindful that it is the only spot with a view on this trail. Otherwise, Happy Trails!! I came, I saw, I conquered! Not coming back though. Lol

Toughest hike, but the view is totally worth it.

Tough! We took the west fork up, reached the pinnacle and came down via east fork. The view was totally breathtaking and worth of climbing. Our dog made it too :) Would definitely recommend this trail.

I started right at 7:30am in the west fork trail up to pinnacle peak and then back down on west fork. I arrived back to my car at 11:20am. I stayed at the top for at least 40 minutes. The earlier reviews are not wrong about the terrain being rocky and uphill. It’s uphill all the way except for the last ¾ mile to the peak. Be especially careful on the way down as you will find yourself loosing your footing on the loose rocks. There was one person at the trailhead when I arrived, but we took different paths, so the next time I saw someone was on the way down, within a mile from the trailhead. The views at the top are gorgeous. It was cloudy, but clear, and the fall colors are visible. If you wait another week, the colors will really pop.

This is a more difficult hike, but the views from Pinnacle are well worth it. The first several miles are steep and rocky; leave your sandals at home, folks. I hiked this trail for the first time in mid-October, and I saw 3 other people total. It’s very quiet, especially at the top. I went to watch the sunset, and did not have enough daylight to complete the whole loop or go out to Black Rock. I will definitely be back again.

This is my favorite trail in western North Carolina because it’s only 30 min from where I live (waynesville) there aren’t many people so it’s great for bringing your dog, it’s a great workout on a decently maintained trail, and it has 2 runoff trails (the pinnacle and blackrock mountain) that lead to AMAZING views. What more could you ask for?

Such a butt kicking bike ! Not for the faint of heart or legs for that matter - I consider my self pretty in shape and this one was a sweat fest ! We did the east side and west side back! Both are beautiful! The east side took about three hours to get up and the shorter west side took about an hour and a half to get down - deff recommend bringing hiking poles if you got them and lots of water ! It was totally beautiful and worth it! Also lots of water along the way making it nice and cool.

Awesome views at the top! Lots of cloud cover but still worth the trek. Hike up is super strenuous with lots of small rocks. Overall, not sure I’d do it again but worth at least 1 trip!

Awesome Hike!!! Did this with 3 people and 3 dogs. Do not take your dog unless very well trained. Some sections get very skinny and tough to navigate with dogs. West fork is very rocky and steep. Whereas East fork is more lush. East is very steep, skinny, and overgrown in places. However, once you reach the top it makes it all worth it. 360 degree views from 5000ft are breathtaking. Would definitely recommend this trail!!

Very quiet and pretty. We did west fork, only about 1.2 miles in and back. Rocky, wear the right boots.

A buddy of mine and I did this one, we went up the east end and out to the pinnacle, then down the west end. We concluded that’s the best route. On the east end there’s some trees down over the trail currently you have to climb over, but don’t get discouraged it’s worth the adventure. At some points on top of the ridge the trail is covered with weeds but it never actually disappears. Again, don’t get discouraged. The lookout it amazing and totally worth the pull up the mountain. Took us about 5 hours round trip with plenty of resting and looking at things. Highly recommend!

Just not enough rewards for the work. However at age 53 it was rewarding that I completed this hike. Might have been the toughest hike I have ever done. The first two miles are brutal and mostly all uphill but the hardest part is all the loose boulders and rocks. Seemed like an old riverbed. Just cannot go too fast because of lack of footing. The last 1.4 miles( to the pinnacle) is mostly flat and a good break. The one real reward is the views at the top. However no real views on the way up. Maybe that would be different in the late fall and winter. Important to know there is water at about 1.8 miles, a small waterfall. Also good place to cool off. In fact that gave me a much needed boost and second wind. I did not go back on east fork but returned on the west fork which is what I went up on. I heard east fork might be tougher and did not think I was up for that. My feet are killing me from all the boulders.

Would not suggest this trail to beginners. The views are beautiful, but the rocky trail was even more difficult on the way back down. Be prepared for a tough day - I was not :) glad I finished though.

Going up the west trail was fine! It seems like it’s an old service road. We decided to go down the east trail and that is the difficult part. There are a lot of down trees and it’s very overgrown. If you go I suggest going out and back through the west trail instead of doing the loop. I also logged that it was 9 miles to do the loop and it took us about 5-1/2 hours with a 30 minute break at the top.
