Rugged hillsides, pastoral meadows and farmlands surround what is believed to be one of the oldest rivers in North America the New River. Its waters are slow and placid. Its banks are fertile and covered with wildflowers. Dedicated as a National Scenic River in 1976, this gentle river is the centerpiece of New River State Park. The New River area still maintains an old-fashioned charm. Mountain roads are narrow and winding, dotted with small farms, churches and country stores. The river itself is tranquil, offering good bass fishing, trout streams, excellent birding and inspiring mountain scenery. But perhaps the best way to absorb and appreciate the river's peacefulness is from the seat of a canoe as it glides across the slow-moving waters. Four areas with access to this waterway make up more than 2,200 acres of New River State Park and provide spots for camping, canoeing, picnicking and fishing.

this Trail was exactly what we were looking for, with some flat walking by the river and just enough height to climb up and get some good views. I imagine if you go during the spring summer or fall you may not get much of a view, but during the winter you can see across the valley and it's very pretty.

Great little hike at New River State Park. We would love to come back and kayak the New River, but the hike was a great substitute.

Nice short hike but not much scenery or sun. The path is very narrow in the bridge was slick with algae. The entire hike is under the canopy of the forest.

This is part of the US 221 Access section of the NC New River State Park. I started out on the River Run trail from the parking lot on the southern edge of the park. The first eight tenths of a mile of the 1.4 mile trail is mostly flat, and has pretty views as it follows close to the river. Near the end, the trail moves further away and includes a few small switchbacks as it heads up in elevation. I completed a nice 2.1 mile loop by taking the Hickory Trail back.

good to hike a mile or two without having to go to blowing rock or the parkway

Very nice and clean campground. Sites were much larger than typical sites at other campgrounds. Bathhouse was clean and accessible. We went on a very relaxing kayaking trip on the New River.

I use the campground as a base for my kayak fishing trips. Always clean

A very nice campground for sure. I have been here for many years, often on Labor Day. I often camp in the drive-to electric section. Nice kindling available, and fire ring. Great visitor center and trails. The river is nice for kyacking, canoeing, or tubing.
