Great trail. Very scenic. Couple of streams to cross. But very nice. Does have lots of roots and rocks. But overall very nice.

HikingGreat!Muddy

Good hike. Definitely more shaded. On the harder side due to elevation gain, but can definitely take your time. Wear quality shoes- can get super slippery plus tons of mud. 7.6 seems short- I clocked around 9.7.

CampingGreat!

Strenuous and rewarding hike. Definitely more than 7.6 miles! Brought our 6 year old husky with us on the hike. Would recommend! Views at the top were amazing! The last mile to the top had our legs and lungs SCREAMING!

BackpackingGreat!Scramble

Trail is well marked, and just stunning views all around. We only did half of the trail starting at the Grandfather Mountain swing bridge parking lot, up to McRaes peak and back. Took about 3 hours, and that was taking our time, and taking photo’s. It was incredibly windy this day, and some ice in spots, that was easily avoidable. I really enjoy hitting this trail late in the year as it is less traveled, and you almost have the wilderness to yourself.

Moderate Trail in terms of elevation gain (lots of roots and rocks though) leading to a beautiful view of Boone Bowl from Storyteller's Rock.

An amazing hike! Would do it again, as soon as I recover. I didn’t really like the first two miles being right beside the highway. The ruggedness and ladders are a non-issue, don’t be intimidated by them, they’re easy. The elevation gain is probably the most strenuous part of this hike.

Steady climb through several stream crossings and switchbacks. The latter half of the trail is a significant climb over rock where the trail itself is being modified. Would rate this aspect difficult.

Did this trail Saturday November 7, 2020. Hit the trail just before 8 a.m. It was a beautiful day. The Profile Trail is a good warmup for the insanity (in a good way) to follow. It starts out as a nice wide trail with gentle grade and graduates into more of a single track with plenty of switchbacks and a few small creek crossings. After the first campsite, the trail becomes increasingly more steep and eventually becomes steps. They are currently putting in some new steps. I have no idea how they got that mini-excavator in there. I checked my fitness tracker at the junction with Grandfather Mt. Trail and it was just over 4 miles. I have never hiked a trail quite like this one. The trail weaves in and out of forest along the ridge and you spend a decent amount of time on rock slab. Just follow the light blue blazes when the trail is on rock. Even when it seems like the trail is just going off the side of the mountain. After Attic Window Peak there is a steep scramble that is more than hiking but less than climbing. If this is too daunting you might as well turn back here. Just past the scramble is a ladder that drops into a cave-like structure that is really cool. Just past the intersection with Underwood Trail there is a ladder and then a cable to help navigate a steep slab. There was quite a bit of ice here but it was mostly on the far left side. This was actually easier than it looked. We took the ladder up to McRae Peak. Didn't stay long as there was a bit of a crowd. There were amazing views to the south from here. The section of ladders down from McRae Peak was very crowded and created a bottleneck. The first ladder going down was the probably the most intimidating of the all the ones we encountered. I would skip the trip to Linville peak next time. The swinging bridge added nothing to the trip. My fitness tracker said 6.7 miles at this point. We returned via the Underwood Trail, skipping McRae peak on the return leg. It was rooty and rocky and at one point just became hiking up a rockfall. The ladder here was one of my favorites. The Profile Trail intersection was a sight for sore limbs. My tracker said 9.3 miles at this point. It read 13.38 miles back at the car. I just checked Google Fit and it said 11.6 miles. I suspect the truth is somewhere in the middle. It is definitely not 9.6 miles. This was the most strenuous hike I've done yet. And one of the longest. It is not one I would take with a small child or a pet. It is physically and mentally demanding. Allow yourself more time than you think you'll need to complete this one. I figured 7 hours tops and ended up taking 8h 52m, but we took our time and there was some waiting at the ladders and the scramble. Overall, I would definitely do this one again, and add Calloway Peak. The views and overall trail variety are second to none. I just have to find a new hiking partner. My last one said, "Never doing that again."

Trail not very well mark, especially at the beginning. Lots or rocks and roots. However the scenery is definitely worth it.
