quiet on colder days, we didn't see a ton of people. it was a nice, easy hike. we combined the lake loop and fern trail and it made for a nice 2 mile hike.

Pretty great views and the rock structures are great for running and jumping.

Running and jumping through the rock structures is a blast! Views from the cliffs are pretty incredible for the area. The tower took away from the natural beauty a bit but overall it was decent hike.

It was late afternoon by the time we reached Rocktop trail from the Sparrow Springs parking lot. Fallen leaves can make for unsure footing on the rocks but it wasn’t a difficult trail. We enjoyed the expansive views and spiny rock formations along the spine of the mountain.

I wouldn’t take young children on Rocktop trail due to steep drop-offs.

Rocktop trail meets a gravel road that leads up to Rocktop Tower. You have to trace the righthand side of the tower to reach Crowders Mountain Trail. From the summit you descend stair steps then follow a manicured, shady trail to return Sparrow Springs parking lot.

Good exercise, beautiful view!

Dogs must be leashed. $13 to camp. You have to cross a busy State road to hike the trail. After that it gets pretty good, challenging with great views

Short trail but very steep. I recommend wearing hiking boots since there are a lot of rocks at the top. When we went up it was very foggy so didn’t get a great view but definitely want to do again! Also, there are about 150 steps near the top. Brought our 6 year old lab and 4 month old golden puppy, both of which had no problems completing the trail!

My favorite trail so far at crowders.

Awesome weekday hike, not crowded. Good workout with beautiful foliage & views all the way to Charlotte.

I didn’t find it as hard as it sounds. The view from the top was astounding!

I hate a gravel path trail! The views at the top make it worthwhile though

nice climb , the view from the top was fantastic. will be going back soon

Really fun trail. Take a picnic and enjoy the views from the overlook while you have lunch. I started at the visitors center about 4:00 on a Sunday, not too crowded. I do recommend adequate shoes. I didn’t think it would be bad and wore a pair of sneakers. Wish I would have worn my hiking shoes. GPS had my hike at 4.75 round trip. Great hike!

They call it rock top trail for a reason. The run is great, and will do it often, but I still get slowed down going over all the large rocks. I guess I gotta work on my technical trail running

heavily trafficked on the weekends. very dog friendly. This trail is straight up the entire hike and then tons of stairs to get to the top. The peak offers a large flat rock area to sit and relax or picnic while taking in the rewarding view.

not the best for a hot day, lots of people but still a solid good hike.

Steep going up but fun. Beautiful views, Charlotte downtown also looks great from the top

Great quick hike. Did get pretty steep going up backside trail but it was pretty and worth the sweat!

I love crowders mountain! It’s not too difficult, it’s just right! Rock top is my favorite trail!

Have just about every pic you could take on the mountain except at sunrise/sunset. Took some good ones with a storm rolling through and then the sun going down.

This description and the linked directions do not match. If you want to hike this trail, go to the state park visitor center entrance, the trail head is there. These directions lead to a different park entrance from which you can hike 1.7 miles up (literally) to the Rock Top trail. Turning this into a loop from this parking lot will be much more than 5 miles. Rock Top was much less trafficked than the trails that this leads you to, so I recommend it. I also recommend sticking with Hiking Upward if you’re hiking in NC/VA/DC/MD. This is not the first time All Trails has steered me wrong, but it will be the last.

rocktop rocks.

Not much to see on the way up but the top has a gorgeous view that makes this all uphill hike worth it! We went on a Sunday and it was rather busy but not so much that we couldn’t enjoy it.

Great hike when you only have a couple hours. Climbing to see the top is a must, the view is worth it.

Great path, good exercise) I hiked with 8 yo son, he also liked it.

great hike , although I almost melted in the heat

Nice loop, for a short trail use the first turnoff and go up the stairs. The other side of loop is a very wide dirt/gravel incline that is more like a road than a trail. Both sides are fun and offer a decent work out and rewarding views at the top.

Great experience. Took us about 3 hours to go up and down. Fun and adventurous climbing though some rocky areas. The reward at the top is so worth it. Absolutely beautiful. Dog friendly and lots of friendly people

It was short but uphill. My 4 & 6 year old hiked it with me with minimal complaints. Beautiful view at the top!
