Great trail. Not too too difficult. The views from the top are excellent. Well worth the hike.

Great trail to takes the kids on. It can be overwhelming how many people are out here though. It is a very heavily trafficked trail. But my four year old loves it, sitting and snacking up in the bald is her favorite. If you add the pinnacle trail to your day it makes it a bit more worthwhile. Great hike to take the dog on, just be aware that not everyone keeps their dogs on a leash, and you may run across a loose one on your hike. :-/

Good little hike. Johnson’s Farm was interesting but other than that there is not much to see other than forest for remainder of hike. Views are obstructed by trees and the feeling of being on a hike is sort of lost as you hear mowers and work being done on nearby parkway.

Great views from the peak and got there after the last shuttle left to go down so it was not crowded. I enjoyed the steepness of the trail near the top, it gave it that earned feel to the hike. I had to wait a twice for does to move from the trail to keep going. Never had a deer pose for a picture from 6ft away. Next time through I hope to do round top on the other side

East, short hike with an alright view.

Cool, short hike. Old structures still standing from early settlers. Recommend taking the connecting trail to cascades.

The parking lot to the trail was still closed, so we hiked 0.8 miles from the nearest parking and had the trail to ourselves most of the way. Beautiful views at the top, easy hike, good for the pup. We did not hike down to the waterfall. Next time, we’ll be bringing a hammock for some R&R at the top if it’s quiet, again.

Very nice hike and perfect weather. This isn't a difficult trail and it has 360 degree views. You can see to the Black Mountains, Grandfather Mountain, and all kinds of views. The climb is a little rocky but very manageable for most people and kids.

Fun trail, lots of places to play! A little uphill, some downhill, curves, roots and all around good ride!

Hiked this trail today with my husband and 12-year old daughter and her friend. I’m not in great shape and the kids are not super active so I was a bit nervous about it but the trail is in great shape and the falls are spectacular! We loved it. We had so much fun climbing around on the rocks at the base of the falls in the mist and wading a bit even though the water was very cold. Got some great pictures. Made for a lovely afternoon. Arrived about 1:30 pm and we were done by 4:00 even though I am a pretty slow hiker. It wasn’t very crowded but there were a few other people hiking it today. I think about 5-6 cars during the whole time we were there. I would do this one again and I’m glad we went.

Today we hiked Harkening Hill in Bedford County, Virginia, adjacent to the Peaks of Otter Lodge. Gorgeous spring day, brisk clear weather and no wind (yay). We had hoped to go back to Thunder Ridge but the Parkway access was blocked at the Peaks. So my hiking companion said “surely there are trails here!” And she was right! Harkening Hill is a 3.5 mile single track loop with a 921 foot elevation gain within 1.5 mile climb to the summit. It is located directly across the Parkway from the Peaks of Otter lodge. Lovely creek beds, birds, chipmunks, typical flora and fauna, abound. Some say moderate but we found it rather easy because the trail is well maintained and not a lot of boulders until you reach the summit.... then HUGE ones! However, it is straight UP. Beautiful views which will vanish when the trees leaf.

Great hike! Short and sweet! Hard may be a stretch. It is steep in portions, but can easily be hiked if you’re in decent shape or hike any at all. It’s a safe hike, a little rocky in sections. The only possible danger is if you check out Buzzards Roost when you get to the top of the main trail. It offers good views and rock formations, if you climb on top of the rocks for a better view, be careful! Also don’t freak out when you hear birds whizzing past your head. I suggest going late in the evening to catch the sunset, it’s worth it and the hike down in the dark is not bad.

Managed to complete the trail before the cold weather set in. Kids loved it, great trail!!

i spent 2 month hiking spet and oct 2017 and seeing sites on and all round the skline and parkway and through 6 southern states and this little trail gives you some on the most incredible views i had seen during my trip. i know some people need to hike miles and miles to be satisfied but they won't see views like this. if you are anywhere near here (even if you have to drive a few hours) i promise you won't be sorry.

This is my first "Hard" rated hike and this trail does not disappoint. We went before the tree canopy was in and the views all the way up were great. If you are in superb shape you might rate this as moderate. But, my 59 year old bones agree with the rating.

Nice walk for the family plus dog.

Excellent route! It was basically what we were looking for. We chose to do it in early April. Although it was supposed to snow, we decided that this won’t stop us. The hike was moderate, beautiful lookout point, amazing waterfall and intersecting river in the second part with a lot of different landscapes. Everything you look for in a hike, even in a not optimal weather.

Great trail! The falls are beautiful, and the drive up to the trail has some awesome views of the mountains too

Great hike with the dogs. Stunning views at the top of the trail. Park with trail head is closed during winter through early spring as are other parts of the BRPW.

This trail leads to nowhere, it was very steep uphill battle of very soupy wet trails, to just end up going right back down the mountainside. No good views or special features in my opinion. Craggy gardens trail is straight across from this entrance and i would recommend that trail over this one any day.

We hiked from parking lot off the Parkway to picnic area and back. It took a little over 5 hours. Good workout!

We intended to hike this trail but upon arrival there were many mountain bikers leaving out. Fortunately we had our mountain bikes with us! Had a great bike. My wife First Time mountain biking, she had a great time but did have to walk some sections. Property is marked private but one guy said he had been biking there for 7 years with no problems just don’t bike when trail is wet. Trail is well marked and directional...at the parking lot start off going to the left.

Loved this walk. A little treacherous with bad knees but persevered and well with it. Continued up the mountain after the fall instead of going back the way you come in. Good decision as the path is smoother is even though longer in miles it was faster pace.

First, the gate going towards Craggy Gardens (Asheville way) was closed for the season I’m assuming. So we had to take Mountain to Sea trail then go there. It was an okay hike, a lot of inclines. The views weren’t as great as expected. The gazebo was definitely the best view there was I believe. No bathrooms were unlocked either. So that’s something to think about. Overall I’d say it was alright if you have nothing better to do!

A great hike with some awesome views. One of my favorite trails.

Difficult, but worth the awesome views.

One of my favorites.. downhill hike into the falls and moderately challenging up and out. This hike can be done rather quickly, but it’s always fun to explore the rocks at the bottom of the falls. We have seen copperheads so use caution.

Hopped on this trail after finding out the Blue Ridge Parkway was closed. Nice hike, dog friendly, but did not appreciate a scenic view. Not sure if we just missed it somewhere along the way.

The marking of the overview could have been more clear, though we did find it and were able to enjoy a drink and great view up there. This was my husband and I’s very first hike, it was a good hike, with great views but the elevation was more challenging than we anticipated. Overall, great hike!
