Great views from the peak and got there after the last shuttle left to go down so it was not crowded. I enjoyed the steepness of the trail near the top, it gave it that earned feel to the hike. I had to wait a twice for does to move from the trail to keep going. Never had a deer pose for a picture from 6ft away. Next time through I hope to do round top on the other side

East, short hike with an alright view.

My review is from the perspective of an amateur landscape photographer.

If you are interested in landscapes and scenic views, pass on this trail. The best scenic view is from the parking lot.

The forest itself isn't all that photographic either. A lot of scrub brush and scraggly pines.

Great hike! Short and sweet! Hard may be a stretch. It is steep in portions, but can easily be hiked if you’re in decent shape or hike any at all. It’s a safe hike, a little rocky in sections. The only possible danger is if you check out Buzzards Roost when you get to the top of the main trail. It offers good views and rock formations, if you climb on top of the rocks for a better view, be careful! Also don’t freak out when you hear birds whizzing past your head. I suggest going late in the evening to catch the sunset, it’s worth it and the hike down in the dark is not bad.

This is my first "Hard" rated hike and this trail does not disappoint. We went before the tree canopy was in and the views all the way up were great. If you are in superb shape you might rate this as moderate. But, my 59 year old bones agree with the rating.

This trail leads to nowhere, it was very steep uphill battle of very soupy wet trails, to just end up going right back down the mountainside. No good views or special features in my opinion. Craggy gardens trail is straight across from this entrance and i would recommend that trail over this one any day.

We hiked from parking lot off the Parkway to picnic area and back. It took a little over 5 hours. Good workout!

Nice hike, wooded. Quiet

A great hike with some awesome views. One of my favorite trails.

Difficult, but worth the awesome views.

Hopped on this trail after finding out the Blue Ridge Parkway was closed. Nice hike, dog friendly, but did not appreciate a scenic view. Not sure if we just missed it somewhere along the way.

short hike, but uphill the entire way ... felt like much longer than 3 miles roundtrip because of how steep the trail is ... beautiful views at the top - completely worth the trek!

My fiancé, my dog (cocker spaniel), and I did this hike after seeing some local photos (we live in Roanoke). Great hike, moderate difficulty, with some truly amazing views. The hike took a little over 2 hours round trip with taking a 15-20 minute break at the top to look at the amazing views. The trail was snowy when we went which made it a bit harder, but overall very enjoyable and would recommend to others and hike again sometime.

We really enjoyed this minus the connection part where you have to walk the busy road then cross to get the the reedy fork part (if you start at the laurel access) and the end where we had to walk again on the busy road and over the bridge/water plant with cars speeding by and with our two dogs it really scared us and them. It isn’t a true loop doesn’t spit you out where you began at all. Pretty bummed about that otherwise it was pretty and fun not very hard.

Love this hike. I have done it usually once a year for the past 18 years. Easy to get too. Dog and kid friendly.

Beautiful! The way to the trail was gorgeous and the views at the top were great. Short but steep.

The trail is about 40 minutes from Asheville. There is another trail head near the same parking lot. Snowball is to your left when you arrive. When the trail comes to a fork about 100 yards in, take a right. A good amount of up and down throughout the hike. Right before the lookout point you have to do some rock scrambling. The view from the top was nice. It had rained the day before so a few spots were a little muddy but not bad.

Husband and I wanted to get into hiking and while on vacation in Virginia, we made this our first hike. We had a blast! We’re in moderate shape and we definitely had to rest a time or two seeing as it’s all uphill with lots of steps but we’re hooked. We went at the end of October when the weather was amazing and the colors were unreal. Great time and great memories!

great little hike, with a variety of scenery. There's enough of an elevation game here to get your attention but it's not too bad. The loop section is really cool as you walk through the rhododendron. the history of the rattlesnake Lodge itself is pretty interesting and it's always cool to see the ruins. Be careful and pay attention to the markings, at the top of the loop make sure you take the blue markers down the hill. If you keep staying on the white marked Trail it'll take you a much further than you're anticipating going.

Probably would have enjoyed this hike more if we went in a warmer spring day. We went on a windy, very cold, January day. Hike to the top is short but all uphill with a good amount of steps. We took our dog with us but I don’t think he enjoyed the steps at all. View from the top is great but the wind was ripping and we didn’t stay up there long. Wanted to check out Buzzards Roost but didn’t have the opportunity today.

Great hike. Family friendly.

Great hike, short and sweet especially in a cold weather like today.

Wonderful, short and steep. Great views all seasons. Note, visitor center and bathrooms were closed

Great hike. Pay attention to blue and white trail markings. You'll be Happy you did.

Great place! All up hill makes for a decent workout, and friendly people.

This trail has great views all the way up in the winter. Lots of steps offer a fun challenge. Took me an hour to reach the top. Also check out Buzzards roost.

First time hiker. Loved it. Beautiful, very scenic views from the top make the journey worthwhile. Great exercise too!

Beautiful hike! And cool historic destination. Blue trail to the left (after settlement) is surprisingly challenging for such a chill trail, but the rhody tunnel at 4100 ft is worth the climb!

Wow! Went last weekend... didn’t realize what I was getting myself into at first. Was pretty strenuous going up the stairs but was worth the hike to see the breathtaking view! My 4 year old daughter hiked the entire way up on her own two legs! Down was much easier, minus having to carry a child.
