Beautiful and icy. Be prepared to deal with the water that has been melting and re-freezing on the rocks. Great view. Easy hike. Fire tower was locked, but we still climbed the stairs and took some photos.

HikingGreat!

All time favorite ADK hike. Only took one hour to get to the top and it was challenging but fun in my opinion. Excellent views. Tougher on the way down. Pond is gorgeous.

Easy to follow and beautiful! Also busy, steep and muddy. Dress in layers — windy and cold at the top. We used walking poles, and took the dog. She is a great dog, but tough to manage on the way down. All in all a really great day!

Hard but totally worth it. Don’t do it after rain or during rain. Wear good boots

We went up the red 1.1 mile route and down the red to blue 2.1. Going up was steep in places and two ladders. The step of the last ladder was not fun for my friends who doesn’t like heights. We did that in 1:18 but we do not rush and stopped for views a few times. Beautiful day and look a long lunch at the top. That part was well marked. Down was okay until we got to a spot being the pond where a steam ran over the rock. There was a rock escarpment and we didn’t know whether to cross it or go to the right. A tree in the middle with a blue marker didn’t give much of a clue. In other places they had arrows where it wasn’t clear. So I decided to venture across to see if I could pick up a marker. I ended up sliding on my butt to creep to the far side after I thought I couldn’t go back and went down thru the trees about 10 feet to the trail. Looking back up the trail was more obvious on the other side...oh well. We later read in Barbara McMarten’s book that this was the one tricky spot on the trip down. A couple met us there and I directed them to the right but then they ended up going downhill in the woods after missing another marker and had to come back up. A little stretch there was not marked as well. That shook us up a little! We later met someone that said you should always go down the other way...oh well. If we did it again, I would take the short cut back from the pond instead of the blue! I didn’t see a lot of value except distance in the blue trail. I definitely would not do this if it was icy due to having to cross some rocky parts!

Trail was easy to follow. At times the trail was worn down to the bed rock some of which was dry some of which was wet with leaves making it a little bit tricky. Erratics and boulders could be found lining parts of the trail as well as a rock face you went through. Overall a great morning blue sky’s temperature was 32 when I started 57 when I finished,

HikingGreat!

Did this hike in September 2019 but wanted to post review now because have come to appreciate feedback in this app. Stunning views from top. Worth the steep ascent. Hiked it with nephew and my my mom 73 at the time. Was challenging for her but she did it. Left trailhead at 2:30 pm. We descended from trial into parking lot after dark. Much wildlife. Gorgeous area for not being that remote.

HikingGreat!Rocky

After reading a previous post I was a little concerned about the difficulty but after completing the loop from red to blue, which took about 3 hours, I have to say yes, its moderate to slightly difficult in some places - but like my son and me - if you have water, use poles and wear hiking boots, you'll be fine. So take your time and you'll have no issues other than GOOD ones. And it is totally worth it. Weather was beautiful - expansive views at multiple levels and the pond was amazing and its beauty was unexpected. I've done over 25 peaks in the ADKs and though this is not one of them, I was happy to know that such an amazing hike was only 1.5 hours from Albany. I highly recommend this hike and I will do it again in the spring

There are 3 trails - red, blue, orange. The orange is easy, the red is moderate, the blue is hell. Don' go to blue unless you're a professional!!! I had to slide on my butt all the way down. And other people on trail who I met also found blue to be extremely hard and dangerous. The blue on map is the part of trail that starts from pond and goes down. The views at the top are really great though. The hike took me about 5 hours

Would be a great hike when the trail is dry and before the leaves fell. Definitely muddy and slippery. Much cautious foot-placement required. Besides that, a nice hike. Steady but manageable grade to the summit, and an excellent view at the top. Busy trail today. Would recommend to a friend.

This is a challenging and breathtaking hike with an incredible view. The fire tower up top looks like a lot of fun to climb. I'm always with my dog so I don't get to partake. :) There's also a pretty cool little shack that used to be for the ranger to live up there.

We really loved this trail! It was totally manageable for my 6 and 11 year old kids, and the rocky terrain kept things interesting. There were some unique boulders that they loved. We only went to the first waterfall, and my AllTrails recording clocked in at 2.6 miles roundtrip (lots of wandering off-trail I guess!). It was quite muddy and slippery after a recent snowfall and lots of leaves, so between that and the rocks and roots you definitely have to watch your footing.
