Wonderful trail. A good portion is close to even level, with some steeper portions at the beginning and towards the end right before the fire tower. Lovely scenery, including the lake and beaver dams. I’ll definitely be coming back here in the future. Highly recommended.

Just a nice walk in the woods on a fall day. Fairly easy hike

Great trail, had a blast. Lots of great gains made me have to push but well worth it. Trail was well marked. Loved the lake with the beaver damns. Great views as well

Had a blast on this hike. Moderate, went just after a good rain and with the leaves on the ground made it a little tricky but all and all we will hit this hike again

Great trail that is well marked. Beautiful in October with leaf colors!

Was on the trail at 8, only ended up seeing folks towards the end. Trails were maintained quite well. Enjoyed it - particularly the short rock scramble.

Enjoyable trail. Great views at the top of the Fire Tower. Recommend doing this counter clockwise so the back half is an easy trail road walk down. If you want a more gradual incline up, go clockwise up the Fire Tower connector trail. As someone else stated, this is on the easier side of moderate, though as always, perceived difficulty is based on many factors such as hiking experience and fitness level. Be careful of slippery leaves in the Fall even when dry.

Close to excellent. This loop is probably on the easy side of moderate. There are a couple of nice views of Sterling Lake on the way up and of course the the 360 degree view from the top of the six story fire tower. The route down is entirely on forest road. A nice easy way to finish the hike. A recommended hike.

Nice trail with great views. A little bit of uneven terrain coming down from the Fire Tower.

Nice hike. Beautiful views n some mini mountain climbing. Came with my dog he enjoyed it more than me. Recommend

Beautiful trail.

This trail intersects with some lovely 17c iron forge ruins, definitely diverge to peak at them!

9.25.19. On a clear early Fall day, I don't think you can get much better hiking than this anywhere in the region. It's a tale of two loops — the McKeags Meadow Loop, which is woodsy but with an open feel, and then the Sterling Lake loop, the Northern end of which has a gorgeous beach and views looking south over what is a substantial body of water. The dogs loved it. Quite something to see the lakeside trees dressing up for Fall. As we neared the lot again, we saw some old ironworks ruins. If you would like to try this loop combination, here are my stats as a rough guide: Distance: 8.6 miles Elevation Gain: 935 feet Moving Time: 2:42:20

Relatively easy trail. Some intense elevation gains and a few rock scrambles. I took the yellow trail counterclockwise and then a short cut on the green trail. It cut down about a mile.

The first two miles were on the wide woods road. The trail back from the sand beach area was not as well maintained. The trail was overgrown and especially bad in the power line right of way. We will return to Sterling Lake and hike to the sand beach and turn around and hike back on the west side of the lake.

A great trail with lots to see! Beautiful water fall and flowing water, ruins of the old furnace and a lake.

Good relaxing hike. Not too long or too short. Nice view of the lake and cool views of few swamps. Recommend it.

Nice walk in the forest. Would recommend going counter-clockwise. Being August, the swampy south side of the trail was dry, but I can see how this would be muddy during the spring/early summer. Met a hiker who said they saw a bear on the north side of the trail on their way to Bare Rock.

Great trail. Access to open lake with beautiful views. Brought my dog. He had a blast. I recommend it.

I love Sterling Forest State Park... beautiful visitor center, well maintained trails, and a variety of hikes. Enjoyed the hike to the Fire Tower. Great quick loop!

Beautiful hike with great views for about 1/2 of the hike of gorgeous Sterling Lake. I would say it would be an easy hike if I had not been carrying my toddler in a backpack but because of that I rate it as moderate. Loved it!
