Quick and quiet trail through the woods opening up to beautiful pond view with small mountain backdrop. Great foliage still when we hiked on 10/19. Only passed one other couple and their dog. Easy to find, trail well marked, and plenty of parking spots.

Beautiful moderate hike. There was nothing I found overly steep or difficult. Make sure to follow the cairns when you get to the rocky areas. There are also still some markers, so between the two I had no trouble finding the summit. There are a few false summits so just check for more markers or cairns :D Each one has lovely views, as does the final summit. The trail was not crowded at all, even on a Saturday, which was lovely. I really enjoyed this hike!

There isn’t any fee to enter the campground parking lot during the off season. The campgrounds are closed, but parking for the various trailheads is open. Treadway is a moderate trail, nicely marked, easy to follow . Most of 2,200+ ft ascent comes in the last 2 miles of the 4.4-mile OW hike (as measured by AllTrails from the parking lot; btw: the ADK Mtn Club guide book says it is 3.9 miles from the lot). There are several rocky false summits, each marked with cairns which make it easy to follow the trail. Beautiful views W to Crab Pond and the Pharaoh Wilderness. Easy to see beyond to the High Peaks, situated N and W of Treadway. The fall foliage was at peak color. Very few people were on the trail (unusual for a fall Saturday), allowing a real sense that we had the forest to ourselves.

Well marked trail with a very small climb early on. Some blow downs and very minor overgrowth. The pond at the end is beautiful... very secluded and quiet.

Super steep at the end. Wet and slippery. High clearance vehicle is a must to drive this far. Was nervous about crossing the little flooded area, but many others made it thru with their vehicles. A little longer than AllTrails claims

Lots of big puddles on the trail but easy to walk around. Easy trail to do with 2yr and 5yr-old. The toddler rode in the pack when she got tired but was able to walk for much of it. Stopped and ate lunch by a small waterfall. No bugs now, lots of beautiful autumn leaves and nice moss. A few people on the trail, but not busy and trail wide enough to step far aside.

I would classify this as a beautiful walk in the woods to the lake. There are lots of trails from there to explore.

HikingBlowdown

We wandered up Pharaoh Lake trail and veered off to the east to Crab Pond, nice little side trail to see a picturesque pond. Crab Pond trail has some blowdown issues, but is otherwise in good shape. Round trip from the parking lot to Crab Pond is a hair over 6 miles.

When rating a trail, people should really add context. It helps no one to call a trail like this “easy,” because it would only be considered easy by a very experienced hiker who is in very good shape. For an experienced hiker in decent shape, it is a moderate hike. As others have pointed out, it’s a long flat walk for most of the hike, until the last 1.5 miles or so. The views from the top are spectacular. Follow the different herd paths at the top to see views west and east.

Hiked this on a warm day, about mid 70s, no humidity. Moderate in difficulty. Trail markers did not match each other for stated distance at various junctions. I canoed across Putnam and accessed the trail at the 'Southwest End of Putnam Pond', which was clearly marked with a small sign, about 75 feet to the left of remote site 7 for the campground. This is supposed to shave off 2 miles round trip if you were just to hike it from the parking lot. Once you get a few miles in, the trail markers are a bit trickier to follow if you are not paying attention. One group we passed on the way down actually said that they had gotten turned around. This is great for someone who has down a few mountains. There are some steep spots, but you could easily lift a child or dog over the ledges. View over Putnam Pond excellent with fall foliage, some of the High Peaks to the North, and Pharaoh Lake as well. I would imagine this would be buggy in the spring and very muddy due to the wetlands. Do not plan on having access to water, unless you crossed over to Putnam Pond.

HikingGreat!Rocky

This trail was great but long and exhausting. I started the trail from the first parking lot at Crane Pond Rd (meaning I didn't drive the bumpy road towards Alter/Crane Pond). When I reached Alter Pond, probably after walking around 0.65 miles, I decided to go to Goose Pond. The 0.6 miles (1.2 miles roundtrip) to Goose Pond were worth it, such a beautiful and serene pond; saw a bunch of small turtles there. When I arrived back to Crane Pond Rd I continued walking the bumpy road towards Crane Pond. After 3 miles of walking, I started going to the Pharaoh Mnt summit through the Pharaoh Mountain trail. The trail was fine, mostly flat until it started to get steep. It was probably about 1.4 miles of steep ascent to the summit that burnt a lot of my energy. Nonetheless, the day was a little hot and humid for late September standards, so that made it more difficult. These 1.4 miles had no tricky parts at all, but just a constant steep path. By the time I reached the summit (6.06 miles and 2 1/2 hours), I was happy but tired. The summit was nice (not wow but great), a lot of fall foliage probably close to peak, you can see many ponds and lakes from up there, got a nice breeze. I understand why this mountain is considered hard. I run about 25 miles a week on average at a 8:30 minutes per mile pace and let me tell you, this hike was rough. Maybe the weather affected me more than I expected as I perform way better under colder temperatures. Going back I wanted to make a right on the Long Swing Trail to see Osxhoe, Crab, and Horshoe ponds but I was fried. I guess I will have to do this another day. By the time I got back to my car the total distance traveled was 10.88 miles. If I hadn't made the trip to Goose Pond it would've probably been 9.6 miles in total. Coming back, I saw a 2-3 feet snake on Crane Pond Rd, probably half a mile from the parking lot.

Did not go up the mountain ended up walking around the lake. Filtered water from the lake and it worked out well. Absolutely amazing trail for backpacking.

Nice wooded trail. Well marked. Not too steep. Ok for dogs - just one place where a small dog might have to be lifted up but our 50 lb dog jumped up just fine. Definitely take the side trail to the lake for a photo or to sit on the rock on the point. Sept 25 leaves are just starting to turn.
