Great hike. Did on 9/16/2018 with 7 kids age 5-11. 1:40 to the top and 2:30 down the lake side and around through the ponds.

Trail: This is a trail for hiking boots - I regretted wearing trail runners. At first, the trail follows a maintained gravel road from the trailhead register for ~1.0 mile. The next 2.6 miles or so follows a somewhat-dry stream bed or drainage. Beware, this part of the trail is filled with wet, slippery, slimy stones and roots, worst than most trails in the surrounding area or even the High Peaks Wilderness. Footing can be treacherous. I would consider the conditions on the vast majority of the trail to be poor.

Views: There is one view at the summit looking towards northern Lake George into Vermont and the Lake Champlain valley. Admittedly, this view is quite good. The summit is quite small though, and tends to be busy. There is a radio antenna tower with a large electric generator constantly making noise at the top.

Water: Despite the moisture on the trail, there were no sources of water to filter. It's not a terribly long hike though. 2-2.5 liters should be plenty.

Overall: It has a beautiful northeast-facing view, but the noise at the top from the generator, the small summit area, combined with the rocky/rooty trail makes this a hike-once type of mountain for me. There are better views on better maintained trails along Lake George. (Sleeping Beauty, Buck Mtn, Cat and Thomas Mtn, The Pinnacle)

Great for a lunch trip - My goal was to go to summit without stopping, did it in just under 90 minutes and I would say it was a moderate pace for first 2 miles then slow (steep) for the last mile. Gorgeous views and multiple vantage points of the lake to explore at the top.

Really great day hike. First two miles or so we’re pretty tame. Last mile kicked it up to the summit. Brought our 2 yr old German Shepherd and she loved it. Some pretty serious scaling up towards the top. She did better than I did...

I’ve hiked buck several times. It’s a great hike, closer than most for me, but it’s always very crowded, more than most I’m assuming because of proximity, with people that have little trail etiquette and more trash in the area. This would be a good mountain for more education on etiquette to be available. I now will typically only hike it in the off season very early in the AM.

Loved this hike! We started at the trailhead, following the red DEC discs up to the (unimpressive) summit. Trail was wide, and clearly marked; fairly gentle to start, but eventually became quite steep. Descended along trail on south side of the summit; single-track, slightly overgrown, steep in places. Blue trail is clearly marked with DEC discs, and offers a nice stroll through the woods past the ponds. Yellow trail to the left takes you back towards the trailhead.

Great hike for a family. Not too difficult for our 8 and 6 year olds and beautiful view at the summit. Would highly recommend.

Love everything about it. The only thing was that when I got to the top, it was so foggy I couldn’t appreciate the view. But will definitely do it again.

Loved this! Easy to find and great for families. We hiked down to the lake and enjoyed the coves and boat watching.

Attended on an overcast Saturday,August 11, 2018 — Small parking lot, but you can find parking along the road. There’s a sign in book for day hikes and overnights. It super dog friendly, and I assume a lot of the locals use it as a workout. The hike will challenge you—saw a few who gave up and turned back. The hike is moderate but a good workout when looking to burn some calories. A lot of elevation—the view at top is sweet. Bring lunch—opportunity for a nice picnic up there—worth it.

A bit rough getting to the top, but well worth it! Make sure to continue on past the first summit for a spectacular second summit!

Very nice hike with great views! Don’t think many would walk the road from the first parking lot if they knew there was plenty of parking at the trail head - believe me, don’t waste your time walking the road, just drive the (narrow) road up to the trail head and you’ll be glad you did.

It was a nice but busy day at the trailhead since it was Labor Day weekend. There was no parking in the lot and the trail was busy. When we were hiking up a lot of people was coming down as we started a little later. We shared the summit with 2 other groups as we ate snacks and took pictures. This hike never gets old.

Jim was great tour guide

Don't listen to the other post's when they say that there is obstructed views. When you get to the top, you think there is no view but you have to go down about 200 feet and there's a clearing and the view is spectacular. 180 degree views. Highly recommend!!!!

Amazing view and this trail wasn't crowded when I went. Spectacular view for a moderate hike

Just hiked up and back today. Very pretty vista at the top (both the false and actual summit). Well worth the effort (moderately difficult). Relatively crowded, but a very pleasant experience nonetheless.

This hike was amazing. It was only 1.8 or 2.0 miles and it only took an hour or a little bit more to hike. The views were amazing! Would totally recommend it!

Always a great hike that's close to home

This hike was so much fun! Parked at Shelving Rock Falls Lot #1 and took about an hour to get to Calf’s Pen. Then my 11 and 13 yo sons jumped off the cliffs and had a blast. Hike back was the same. I would not call this difficult since there isn’t a ton of uphill but it is dangerous because the trail is right next to the water and at one point my 11 year old slipped off the trail and actually fell in! Luckily it was only 3-4 feet down and we pulled him out unharmed. Be careful!!

Buck is a great day hike for those who are in reasonably good shape and looking for about 2000 vertical feet of elevation gain in about 2.5 miles. We went on a mid-summer Monday and were joined by about 10 other groups of hikers. Definitely popular, but not for those with small kids. We found lots of bolete mushrooms on our hike and they were quite tasty when we cooked them up on our return.

Great overall hike for some perfect views! Take this recommended Loop and you wont be disappointed. No part of this trail is too hard that a family cant do. We got to the top in 45min, & continued on to bushwack to Erebus (that takes some planning). Feel free to send me a message for best recommended route. Enjoy!

Great hike! Lots of steep inclines. Well worth it, though, the view at the summit is amazing!

If you heading to see shelving rock falls, be sure to do this quick hike to catch some summit views of lake George too. Very easy hike for any age or active level.

If you enjoy hustling up a rock scramble incline, this is the hike for you. The effort is worth the view at the summit! Fairly wide trail for most of the route. The first view is stunning, especially after staring at so much greenery for 3 miles. But don’t forget to continue in the the summit about 3-5 miles further on the yellow trail.

A good moderate hike with a very beautiful summit.
There are many steep patches and getting down was especially difficult for me

Nice connecting trail from Buck to Sleeping Beauty.

Nice views of Lake George! A little steeper than some of the other climbs around. I took the trail over the mountain and down to Shelving rock rd. The backside is quite technical with a more narrow trail. Great way to connect to the Sleeping Beauty trails.

Began at the Hogtown parking lot and did the trail to the summit, then the pond and back. We take our time so it took all morning. First time that we had done a mountain summit and it was incredible! Plan on going again in the fall as the view must be wonderful then.

Breathtaking views of Lake George! This hike was difficult but doable. It gets pretty steep at some points. Will 100% do again!
