Just to reiterate others, this hike DOES NOT have a marked short loop. If we didn’t happen upon a few hikers going on the long loop with a paper map we would have wandered around for hours with our two young children. It’s a beautiful hike but THERE IS NO SHORT LOOP. Go to the lookout and go back on same path.

The view up top amazing but the loop trail is NOT marked and if you’re not careful you will get lost coming back. I suggest you return back the same way you came otherwise you will be calling the park rangers for help, which is apparently a common occurrence with this trail!!!

Trail is pretty, but it is hard to do it in winter with all the ice on the road.

Trails are clearly marked! a little difficult when everything starts to melt

Hiking on this trail was ok. The elevation changes a bit from the lake to the path leading to black mountain but the climbs werent that bad. I feel like some of the paths were plotted to test your ability to hop on rocks over water and boggy areas. The first 1/3rd of the trail inbound from the parking lot south is nothing but walking on rocks (unless you want to walk in the mud and water in the low lands). I think it helps to have boots with a metal shank through the sole for walking on some of the rock areas in the park so your feet don't get tired from stepping on corners of boulders all day. For this trail would definitely recommend those kind of boots. You definitely need good boots on this loop. Only gripe I have is that the trail markers could be way better. Some trees, not so bad. Yellow bar trail was relatively easy to find. The white bar trail, which you need to follow out past the shelter (no one says that) is much more trickier to spot. there are no markers when you get to Silver Mine road FYI. You have to figure out that's the way you go. Maybe because it was my first time on this trail it was my fault for not knowing. There are no markers for the part when you come down the hill and hit the road. Past the road into the lowlands by the lake had to look for a bit to find the road again. You can see on the map the red line doesn't follow the intended dotted Silvermine road. So don't blame me if you cant find it at first.

This Hike was OK, got really crowded by the shelter and the road walking at the end isnt so great since people fly down the street. The lake was very nice especially with the fall colors. Not many views unless you add in the short spur to Black Mountain which I highly recommend you do, adds about 250ft of extra elevation gain to your total hike but you get to a very nice lookout point and also get to summit a MTN which also has amazing views of the Hudson on top. PS Trail is very rocky in some spots so make sure you have a good pair of boots.

Really Beautiful. The only reason I give it 4 stars is because at night there isn't enough yellow reflective patch on the trees to navigate out towards the parking lot. It was a bit difficult, but with my offline map, the grace of God, instinct, cellphone lights and the help of our friend Charles, we were able to navigate back to the Parking lot after dark. Such a fun experience. If you are novice, you will be able to do this trail. Make sure you start in the morning and give yourself extra time.

Very pretty trail - lots of great look at points. Watch your markers -

A nice trail. Not very crowded pretty forest. The trail is Rocky I suggest good shoes. Enjoyable afternoon. Even though it was hot trail was pretty much in shade and stayed relatively cool. We went up on yellow about 1.8 miles up the trail is a lento. right after the lento you need to make a left on trail white. I missed that marker and continued on yellow for but about a quarter-mile. I needed to retrace my step but not before I found a beautiful large untouched ripe blueberry patch.

Great trail to hike. Done it now about 4 times in both directions. Love the fact that it’s mostly in the shade.

Extended it over to West Mountain and back in a big loop. Mostly woods hike but nice. There was a Rattlesnake hanging out at the Brien Memorial Shelter. Crossing the Palisades Parkway was a little sketchy.

Winter Hike right after the storm where we end up with about 3 feet of snow and completely wet, but the views were amazing... See Video of hike below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XCdy54OX7Ic

Started the hike on the yellow blazed Menominee Trail to the left (lake side) of the old ski slope. Fairly flat along the lake with packed snow or mud. The trail starts to climb after about a mile toward the AT shelter. We ended up taking the AT away from Black Mountain, doing the clockwise loop to the southwest of the lake. On the well-traveled section of the AT, the snow was fairly deep but there were enough tracks from other hikers so we didn't sink into the snow too much. The last section connecting Seven Lakes Pkwy back to Menominee Trail had not been used much so it was slow going. No clear views from "peaks" on this stretch of the trail as you are in the woods. Did not see anyone on the trail when we started at around 10:30 but there were a lot more people on the Menominee Trail when we came back (after noon). Hope to come back to do the rest of this trail.

Beautiful this time of year. We were there on a weekend morning and traffic was light. My almost 5 year old found the initial part a bit challenging, but once we started descending on the AT he did great. You don't get to see much view between the trees unless you break a bit into the small lake, but this time of year the trees are so pretty you really don't need anything else.

Nice hike... added the extra two miles for epic views from black mountain... totally worth it... bushwhacked a bit at the end to avoid the road... again worth the prickers for the peaceful walk around the lake... you will work for those views :)

I would rate this hike at a 6. Steep at certain points. To get the view of the lake from the top you need to follow the white trail after you go over the road looking path. Start out Following the yellow trail near the lake and than you have to pick up the white trail by Lean to shelter. You follow the white trail for about a mile than you must turn on what looks like a road which is actually silver Mine rd. There are no more trail markers at this point you just follow that road looking path. This hike is definitely NOT 3.8 miles it’s 4.9 miles. They need to mark this trail better!!! when you get to the intersection of silver Mine road and white trail take left onto to the path that looks like a road!! Stay alert or you’ll be hiking over 7 miles.

Great trail. Pass a lean-to across the way and remember to bear left up the scramble. It does end up on the road, but it's only for a short walk back to the car.

Fun hike but could not locate the Spanish Mine

The beginning of the hike and the lake were nice. We didn't like that the end of the trail is the road. Maybe we missed a trail and just ended up on the road. The park seems nice with everyone grilling. We'll have to try that one nice day

Slightly different hike from same parking lot. Stockbridge mountain and Lake Nawahunta loop hike. Completed in February with new fallen snow - was great.

Easy enough hike with a beautiful view of the lake for half of the time.

As noted earlier, toward the end you can cross the stream beneath the dam (some easy rock-hopping) and follow the shoreline back to the parking area. No need to walk along the road.

Challenging, yet fun.
