All of the reviews mention the advantages of hiking counter clockwise, the wayfinding challenges, and the longer than stated distance, which are all true. The hike was a lot of fun. Did it with my dog in mid Feb and it was dry and footing was generally good. Saw several other hikers out with dogs as well and none were leashed, so I’d say it was a great dog-friendly hike. Got to the trailhead at 8am (on a sat) and only a few cars, but it was packed by the time I returned.

Great trail, though agree with others that it’s moderate/hard. Definitely take the loop counter clockwise, much easier to scramble up than down. Additionally, if hiking with a dog you cannot go through the zoo/nature center. Instead take the bypass that takes you around the zoo. You will see a sign right before you go under the Bear Mt. Bridge, it reads “to Bear Mountain State Park”. This is a slight deviation from the trail marked on All Trails.

Lovely hike. One really steep section but the rest is very manageable and kid friendly and the steep section comes about 1/3rd in.

lots of man made stairs definitely a great way to get the heart pumping.

Before to remain on the red trail— if u go onto the blue trail does not leave you back at the beginning of trail

Nice hike.. good views of the Hudson and the bridge from the top of Popolopen Torne. The memorial was cool. We threw in the detour around the pond. It was a great birthday hike!

This was a great trail for a cold Saturday - I think the weather kept the crowds away so there were not as many people even on the staircase section. Be prepared for a small scramble on the northern side of the loop.

Good trail. Was not a huge fan of the man made stairs. Because of the stairs it makes it much more of a walk in the woods vs a hike. However the other half was great.

Amazing sunrise hike! Highly recommend! We did the full loop and the north side of the mountain is very rocky and currently very icy.

I recommend do the stair last on a wet day

Such a beautiful hike. Definitely pretty difficult to get up, but the view all the way down is unlike any other I've seen. It's wide open, windy, and so peaceful. Definitely give this hike a try!

Good but muddy trail on an unseasonably warm January day. Difficult rock scrambles on the way up. Views to NYC at the peak. The way down is more of a set of stairs and was heavily trafficked with people and dogs.

Great day hike trail, highly recommend! Took about 3 hours with stops to take pictures, etc. The views at the top are well worth the effort of the scrambles, etc. Recommend following below reviewers suggestions of 1777--yellow--yellow blue--blue white--white--1777... Gives you the ability to get the hard stuff out of the way early and enjoy the second half of the loop. Went in January so wet leaves made things more challenging but definitely would do again!
