A wonderful historic path from the Bear Mountain dock on the Hudson River to the AT staircase (see my trail description above).

Wanted to try this loop in winter and is still magnificent. The view from Timp pass will show your journey across multiple mountains. Highly recommend. 3.5 hrs including breaks.

Hiker parking is about half a mile down the road from trail head....I would start the hike by going along 9w because I did the other way and going down some of the rock scrambles was a little dangerous......also some of the trails aren’t marked well, and I’m a bit dumb, I got lost and ended up by the palisades parkway and ended up doing a bit of unintentional night hiking haha....I also ended up walking over ten miles (again because I am egregiously incompetent)........but besides that it’s a relatively easy hike with some great views and a cool ass creek! I also wouldn’t bring dogs I saw a man eat shit while trying to carry his retriever down a scramble, the dog was ok though....him not so much....

Good loop with a nice lunch spot at the top. Only issue is it does get quite crowded so go early.

there are 2 sets of blue markers. I took the first set and then at the sign junction I took white with red dot to the bald mountain. from that view point you have 2 options to back the way you came or continue on white with red dot. I tried that and the trail was never ending. finally i came to a blue blaze/white with red dot and I thought that would bring me back to the beginning since it was blue ( I was wrong) ended up running into white, yellow and dark blue blazes also. someone told me to take white to bear mountain and I just cut my losses and did that. it took me like 6 hours. I probably should have just stayed on the bald mountain loop. some of the markers are hard to see so pay attention. hope you have better luck than i did. lots if view points though

I’ll start by saying the views were lovely and the trail is well maintained. Unfortunately, this place is the theme park of trails. If you’re an experienced hiker looking for a nice quiet time, this isn’t your spot. You cannot walk five feet on the weekend without running into another person. Or large groups of people. Running counter-clockwise there’s a great and challenging rock scramble all the way up. Unfortunately, most of the people on this scramble are inexperienced and wearing the wrong footwear so it’ll take you a while to move. People were constantly taking breaks on the trail itself instead of off to the side, who knows why. Once you make it to the top there’s a large area to rest and have lunch. Cool. Crowded, of course. The way down (still running counterclockwise) is mostly rock stairs, easy going. I personally enjoyed the counterclockwise direction going up a scramble instead of stairs, the stairs were definitely more crowded by out and back hikers. If you just want views and a nice lunch spot and don’t care about the noise or groups, great hike. If you want a quiet hike to yourself, go elsewhere.

Great trail in terms of hiking, but kinda lacking in scenic views. There’s a bunch of steep parts which were challenging and fun. However, it doesn’t feel like a nature hike because you run into a bunch of roads at the top. I recommend going counterclockwise because there are stairs on the way down.

quick and easy. 30 min to the top. moderate climbing

Just did this solo hike yesterday and let me tell you it was not a walk in the park! I decided to go clockwise on the trail, ignoring previous comments because of my ego and paid for it. Views were phenomenal however, if you're going for you Instagram feed this might not be the hike for you. The trail is not marked that well so be sure to keep you GPS handy. All in all my adventure ended up being closer to 8 miles but was well worth it for the peace and serenity and immersion in nature.

Messy route (there were some trail closures and a locked gate in the zoo), but I excellent way to do the Popolopen Thorne Koop from the Bear Mountain parking lot. Had to cross the highway 2x but not too bad if you’re patient.

Really nice trail with the exception of the Rt. 9w section which was loud. Hiking clockwise, the first section was a lot of loose and uneven rock, but offered pretty river views. The scramble to the summit was fun and rewarding. Coming down the backside, there were some humorous signs as (I believe) the trail crosses some private land. Great that we are allowed to use this trail! On the last 1/4 mile saw 3 large white-tailed deer. Nice hike. Distance came in at 5.0 miles.

If you want an easier hike up man-made steps (although still pretty steep) go clockwise. If you want a harder hike with steep and semi slippery rocks, go counter clockwise. I went counter clockwise with my 2 year old pitbull, at times I thought it would be too steep for her, as I had to literally climb up rocks on all fours at one point, but she handled it well! I went in a warm Monday in March and there were a decent amount of people and dogs, but not too crowded. The peak was worth the hike.
