Beautiful forest trail. There was 12-18 inches of snow on the trail the day we did it, so really slow going. Covered in snow, it was hard in some places to figure out where the trail was. We've done this trail in the summer as well and the trail is easy to find when it's not covered in snow. Note that the trail is marked, both at the trailhead and on the trail markers, as the Beehunter trail. The full loop is also about 6.5 miles rather than 5.3.

great easy trail. really nice for family treks

not quite what I was expecting but a nice short walk through the woods, it was nice!

Not much of an actual hiking trail, just a paved path that connects to a few different overlooks. The overlooks have a very nice view of the Allegheny Reservoir down below and in the fall it would be perfect for seeing the leaves change.

Great trail in a beautiful area of the park. Steep climb to start the trail with overall elevation gain for the first half of the trail, with the back half being primarily downhill. Very well defined trail, nearly impossible to get lost. Dirt trail, so it can be very muddy (and will be if it has rained within the past few days), which pushes the difficulty up. Highly recommended.

Nice hike though, all the uphill was rough for a beginning hiker. Chipmunks everywhere! We did not see any other wildlife besides LOTS of bugs. Quite a few big rocks for picture taking if hiking in a group. Otherwise, very serene hike. Only a few muddy spots.

Trail is 2.7 miles, not 1.7. Trailhead is a good distance from parking. Wide trail, gentle but frequent hills, currently a few downed trees.

Nice trail! Kicked my butt as it's pretty much just up 700 feet (in a bit over a mile) and right back on down. The trail itself is not always obvious but the markers are very frequent and easy to follow. I went after some rain and there were only a few muddy sections at around 1800 ft. Chipmunks everywhere! I didn't see another person the entire time on the trail (weekday afternoon in March), and really hardly any people in the entire park.

Great trail, well marked. Only saw a couple of people. Beware of the acorns in the fall!!!! Would definitely come back and walk it again.

Definitely a good trail- very nice hike. I would rate this trail as moderate in difficulty.

Good range of terrains, secluded trail, beautiful forest scenery. Trail spans 3 mountains with several good ascents and descents. I would rate challenge level as moderate. Get out and hike!

Good trail. Scenery is your standard Allegheny forest, with some quite pretty patches of woods, larger rocks, and creeks. We didn't encounter too much mud, but I can see how it would be an issue if it's rained recently.

This trail is called the beehunter trail and is well marked once you are on the trail. When the trail ends you will have to find the bike path to follow to get back to your car but it's only about a half a mile away. I would recommend this hike.

Best hikes!! Bear caves and thunder rocks are a must see!!

Nice trail, we didn't do the whole trail. The group I was in we went straight up from our cabins to a trail marker.

2.5 mile loop and 700 ft elevation change is all you need to know. The halfway point is a 2000 ft peak. 1 mile up, 1 mile down. I went when there was 2 inches of snow and it was 24 degrees. Not much to see, but well marked.

Ran the 22k adventure run a few times here. Very runnable trails with the last 2.5 miles is straight up hill to the finish.

I'm not aware of a specifically "10.9 mile trail" in Allegany SP, but there are indeed several hiking trails in the Red House Lake area. We hiked about 10 miles, there-and-back, on the section of the North Country Trail passing through Allegany, accessing it via the Conservation Trail, which starts right behind the Red House Administration Building. This was a moderate hike, with a steady but gradual initial climb and mostly undulating terrain after that. Trails were well-marked. The tree canopy is very dense here, so there's not much understory, which is great for wildlife viewing--we were able to spot and observe a young bear quietly foraging more than 50 yards away. LOVED IT. beautiful place and so much to do

Sunday, October 14, 2012

Great trail! Well marked and abundant wildlife. Trails are challenging on parts but mostly moderate hiking. Huge area for hiking, fishing, camping. Nothing you can't get into here. I think there's an $6 admission to get into park. but a bargain to say the least. Allegheny has the best cabins / camping on the PA / NY border. This is a 2 hour drive for me so I don't get up there as much as I would like. A must do for novice and seasoned hikers alike. Accommodating for families and pets as long as you follow the rules. Do the weekend thing if you want the real experience. The Gem of the North!

Did the 22k adventure run in May. The trails are pretty safe compared to letchworth. The last 2.5 miles of the race was a straight assend to the finish.

Nice trail, runs into other trails and could get confusing at parts. Park really needs to update trail maps. Ex. Bear Cave Trail map is Reversed. We ended up doing the whole trail, which was fine except we had a 4 month infant with us that did his first End to End!

I have hiked these trails in the summer and fall and skied them in the winter. They are very nice, well maintained and give a nice variety. There are a number of different trail loops to choose from. I would recommend these trails to you in any season. In winter you can also rent Xcountry skis or snowshoes near the trail head.
