I did this trail solo on 9/6/18. Was happy my rental car was a small SUV. The gravel/rocky road had large pits and puddles. I would not recommend a sedan.

As mentioned in other reviews, steep climb via switchbacks. I took several Trail shortcuts. Made it to the lake in 1.5 hours. I’m from NC and had been in CO prior to my trip to NM. So I was partially acclimated to altitude. Had the trail and lake to myself. (Was on trail by 8:30.) Saw hikers and HB riders on way down which took 52 minutes.

Totally worth the climb! Highly recommended. I am 63 yr. old female. Do a fair amount of hiking in WNC. One thing I recommend is to put your cell in airplane mode. My battery was almost dead on way down. It was constantly looking for a cell signal on way up. Using AllTrails didn’t help either. But having it on airplane mode would have saved a lot of juice. Happy Trails to You!
