Lots of deadfall. Be careful of hiking in high wind. Great views. Exposed.

May 2019 trip to Southwest, second visit to NM, last time was 15 years ago in late fall. Day 13 First time here (Main Goal#15 of trip). Located along beautiful Jemez Mountain Trail Scenic Byway. Sadly on the way here can see evidence of wildfires with large burn areas. Roads are unpaved, trail starts at Visitor Center, and this is only hike that doesn’t require free vehicle permit. Loop hike is about 1.5 mile. Great introduction to vastness of Valle Grande. Many opportunities to see prairie dogs. Wish that could hike more here!! Some day??

Nice short hike, I didn’t realize this whole area was burned out by fire but it’s still a worthwhile hike.

Nice easy loop with good views, wild flowers and prairie dogs. Good nature hike for young families. I believe dogs are allowed on leash, but confirm at the visitors center.

Steady ascent and descent on an old logging road. Most of the trees are down due to fire, but the trail is mostly clear. Nice views due to the absence of trees. It can get hot, little shade.

Great short but steep hike/run. Good little workout if short on time with nice "payoff" of vast views of the caldera. Little rocky so watch your footing, some blowdown occurs so may have to scramble over a downed tree or two (test them first, sometimes the want to roll!). One of my favorites!

Easy hike, even for ancient me. Saw a bear and an elk. It is OK to take dogs.

A very nice trail! We went on 4/24. NPS fees were waived, but the main road to get to the trail was closed. That added an extra 2 miles each way, but even the road was a beautiful walk. The trail is very short- if the road was open and we only did the trail, we would've planned to do another small trail in the area.

Beautiful hike. Uneven path and had to climb over down trees but nothing too serious. I did it with my three year old and my small dog and it wasn't a problem. My kid is a powerhouse though, I'd be leary taking most kids under five.

An easy, flat trail that gives you some great views of the caldera. Just watch out for prairie dog holes & the prairie dogs themselves (who are cute, but a sign warned that they carry the bubonic plague!)
