Did this trail on 04/07/2018. The weather was perfect. Only a little chilly at night. There is a small stream at the beginning of the trail but the rest of the trail was dry. Beautiful and well kept trail! Several flat spots for camping along the way. Going back this summer for sure!

Great trail. Takes a lot of agility with all the rocks. A lot of steady uphills that will work you pretty good. Beware it’s over 4.7 miles. I think I ended around 6 miles total.

First time on this trail. Great! The views of Sierra Blanca are very nice. A couple of steep climbs, but nothing too difficult. A very well maintained trail! Birds!

It’s a wide trail looks as if atv’s use it often. We always take a small and medium sized dogs so it was a nice trail to take them on. We didn’t see a soul out there the entire trail. It’s all up hill going in and downhill all the way out. Very nice scenery.

Easy to follow for the most part. Also able to knock it out in less than 2 hrs. I recommend early morning or afternoon

Only went in 3.7 miles. The steepest portion of the trail is the first 1.5 miles. It’s rather rocky as compared to the PNW. There were patches of snow but easily done in trail runners. Some slick mud in spots. Saw a beautiful bull elk at about 2.5 to 3 miles in. The trail stays in the trees the whole time and I’m guessing this would be a great hike in the warmer months.

Pretty awesome trail, did not expect to find something like this in the Carlsbad area. I did some trail running but as a mountain biker, I'd say this would be a pretty good mtb trail with several technical sections. Trail is actually much longer than what's listed. I ran 6.5 and actually probably cut off a couple more miles. There is a pretty long loop to the south of what the map shows. It's in lower, flatter country but still pretty enjoyable. Would be more appropriate for beginner mountain bikers, runners, etc. There don't seem to be many bailout options down there though. Would like to try to find some way to upload my loop...

For a hike with kids, this was awesome. Beautiful views. Trail was easy enough for the kids but not so easy that it was boring.

LOVED this one! The lake was beautiful, and not too crowded when we were there in the summer!

I visited this beautiful trail with my granddaughter Natalia at the end of December, some snow but a nice cold weather. We saw more than 20 wild turkeys just near the trailhead where we started our walk, and also we saw them again when we returned to the same point. The trail is not too steep, rocky in some sections but not difficult to walk. We stopped several times to take pictures, to contemplate the beautiful forest and enjoy the nice weather. We definitely recommend this trail.

Was great!! Just watch out for sliding rocks and logs if in larger group. Also when finally at top, there was a huge ring of burn out. All along the trail rangers stacked fallen trees kind of took away from that untouched feeling. All and all great views of forest and lake!

I visited this beautiful trail the first week of December, there were some snow but I could easily drive my SUV to the trailhead, it was also not difficult to walk because not too much snow on the trail. On the way to the trailhead near the road, I saw several herds of elks, and then I could see them running in the distance. The trail is very well marked and although it is rocky, it is easy to walk, even with the snow. The pine and aspen trees forest is beautiful; definitely I will come back again during summer time.

I did this loop trail at the end of November; the day was very pleasant, excellent for hiking. On the half part of the trail you gain elevation, not too steep in such a way that you can easily walk and enjoy. As you return, from the top, you can contemplate the amazing landscape. This is definitely a nice trail.

Not sure who rates these trails. This should be more of a moderate listing. I hiked one the other day that was listed as moderate but was definitely easy.

About this trail...love it. I’ve rode mountain bikes around it and fished the lake, but really enjoyed the quiet walk around on this loop. Saw mule deer while hiking. Only a few others out using the trail. Highly recommend this trail.

Awesome trail for running. Saw a moose, wild turkeys, and several deer. As long as you give them space, there's nothing to worry about. A bit muddy in spots, but that's part of the fun of trail running. Also saw bear tracks, but no bears. Definitely a favorite.

Beautiful, moderate trail. Will definitely be going back! Ps-we saw a lot of cows. As long as you ignore them, you’re fine!

Flat landers had an enjoyable morning and mid day hike. My bride of 31 years and my loyal golden retriever joined in and all had a great day. The weather was perfect. The end of hike fetching sticks in the lake and swim was the highlight for Emma. We saw quite a few deer. I would do the hike again on another trip to Ruidoso. I found it pleasant seeing and hearing the joyful sounds of families enjoying the lake as we were nearing the end of our hike

Very nice trail with some mildly challenging terrain. Saw some deer. The only drawback is that there is some noisy construction in the area.

I did this trail with my husband and our 2 dogs. The 10 mile loop took us about 5 hours to complete. If you do bring your dogs or even if you don't, be aware that quads and dirt bikes are allowed on the willie white trail. We came across 3 groups pf dirtbikers so we had to get off the trail and get our dogs as soon as we heard them in the distance.

Started from 113 willie white more hard then moderate this route had lots of wild life more visitas then expected no other people

Amazing trail in the middle of the forest! I loved walking under the shade of the pine trees and admire the spectacular scenery. During most of the journey, butterflies were flying near me, like telling me that I was welcome to their home. Listening also the quaking aspen trees was a very pleasing moment. All the trail is steep but not much, only the last half of a mile is steeper. The weather was nice, although is rainy season, it was only cloudy part of the day, so, it was a fantastic hiking day!

My 7 month old lab and I really enjoyed this hike. I was able to hike the trail up the mountain, while my 70 year old mother walked the broad, level, dirt path alongside the lake. Something for everyone at Grindstone Lake!

Great loop and lots of flowers/plants in early August. Saw three or four other people and a couple of mule deer

Trailhead was difficult to find (I am not sure we actually ever found it) but we made our way back to intercept the trail.

Most of this hike was on actual trail - no roads except though campgrounds. Equal amounts of forest cover and exposure.

We cut off the northern section to shorten our route a little. Part of this trail shares sections of the Osha Trail and the Pines Trail (a forest road).

Fun ride. Pretty muddy and slick in parts, nothing too bad. Only had to walk the bike around a mud pit once. Brought my dog and he loved it as well. We got dropped off by car at the top and rode down the trail to Russian Canyon road. Beautiful shaded ride in the forest.
