Hiked (walked a good pace) this trail yesrerday (mid July) and it was great! The trail was long and challenging for an amateur like myself. The incline made for a tough trip up, hiking alone I definitely had to push myself. The trip down was cake, until...the last stretch without shade in 100+ degree heat. I felt like I was walking through death valley, like I might just not make it back to the car. I read that it was about 2 hours up and 2 hours down but that must have been the runners or really intense hikers because it took me almost 3 hours up and a little over two down (stopping a bit for pictures). If I would have known it would have taken me longer I would have left earlier in the morning, lesson learned. Would definitely like to go again but after getting some pretty intense sunburn in that last stretch back to the parking lot, I would go earlier in the day (6am or earlier) or would go during a cooler time of year. Also the view at the end of the trail isn't great, so if I ever do it again I'd like to continue on to the crest trail to see what you can see from that trail.

Trail is currently closed.

My husband and I hiked this trail in Feb. 2017 and used our crampons as soon as we came upon ice. A good half of our hike went through snow, and at the top through the switchbacks we were hiking through knee deep snow a few times and at one point I stepped off the trail and the snow came up to my thigh in one of the drifts. We hiked this trail part way once before going all the way to the top and back down. It took us a total of six hours, four up two down. Overall, really amazing hike with the snow. Have yet to try it during the summer, but I imagine it can get quite hot. Carry plenty of water and take snacks. We had a snack break about 3/4 of the way up and again at the top and you definitely need that extra push. We have hiked tent rocks many times and multiple other short hikes around New Mexico before, but this was our first big out and back all the way. Have to tackle La Luz soon!

Beautiful coming down at sunset. I’d call it moderate. Plan time to do part of the crest trail as well since the view from the top is obscured by trees

Awesome run. A bit tough running about mile 3.5, very rocky. Great tree cover, very pretty, and beat me up. If you like trail running, a great challenge, pretty, and hardly anyone above mile 2.

Great trail. 2 hours up and 2 back

We only went about 3.25 mi up (6.5 round trip) at a leisurely pace; took about 3.5 hours with small breaks and a 20-30 min break where we turned around.

Lots of periodic shade in the trees and nice breezes once you start gaining elevation.

I trail ran this trail and the Crest Trail and it killed my Quads a few days later as the first five miles is almost all up hill nearly 2700 feet of elevation gain.
Tree cover is lacking until you hit about mile 4 because the Pine boring Beatles have decimated the forest. The first mile is all desert floor to the foothills.
The trail starts crowded on the weekends but once you get to mile 3 you'll be all alone. Most turn around a little over half way up.
Once at top, take the left at the Poles down Crest Trail for beautiful views of the valley.

Be sure to find the lunch spot rocks at the end of the trail. You take a right on the Crest Trail and at the sign for the Cienega Trail (visible from the Pino Trail sign) just head right up the rocks then left on a small trail which provides access to a long shelf of rocks directly over the last section of the Pino Trail. I put this on the recording but it’s easy to find.

Great hike and weather. Tough going up as it’s all uphill.

Great trail for a windy day! Enough tree cover to block the wind, but great unobstructed outlooks. Took about 5.5 hours top to bottom.

Love this hike! After the first mile it’s nice to get into the trees and shade. Good views of the mountains. Nice little grove of Ponderosa pines about 2.5 miles up. Good spot to sit and have a snack.

It was a hard climb, but many places to rest and see some beautiful scenery. It’s early April so there was a spot or two of ice/snow, which didn’t cause any issues.

Hiked this trail in about 60 degree weather and it was wonderful. Great, smooth footing throughout with some really nice views. The trail goes from scrub brush to thick spruce forest.

This is honestly one of the most beautiful hikes I've experienced in the Sandias! At 4mi the switchbacks got pretty slick because the snow hasn't melted yet. My pup and I made it to 9,180 ft on the Crest Trail and would've kept going if I had better shoes/poles. Can't wait to do it again once the snow is gone!

What a dream of a trail. You get a little of everything, desert, technical, forest, ridgetop single track. I love this run, can't recommend it enough. From mile 4 on there is still quite a bit of ice, not so bad going up, coming down was an adventure. The single track is incredible once you hit the Crest Junction I highly recommend you push on for at least an extra quarter mile to enjoy it.

This is a very enjoyable trail! The incline is a bit severe but I enjoyed it thoroughly

Challenging hike due to steady incline, great workout. Trail hugs the side of the mountain so the views are unbelievable!

Great day hike with beautiful views. There is still snow on the top portion of the trail so trekking poles and possibly micro spikes will be a help. Pino is not as strenuous or long as La Luz but will give you a good workout.

LOVE THIS TRAIL!! Lovely trees and a nice view of the Sandia rock formations, plus a great view of the city once you're into the trail a ways. I'll definitely be coming back here!

Great hike! Lots of trees, more the farther in you go. Plenty of shade and a gorgeous view of the mountains ahead and the city behind.

Great little trail run from Elena parking, 9.1 mike RT, last couple miles more power walking than running with 2800 ft elevation gain:)
