The only thing truly “hard” about the trail is the length. There are no real steep inclines. I went the day after Tropical Storm Fay so it was very wet and buggy. There are times on the trail where it’s moderately overgrown but still easy to navigate. The stream/creek off of Shotwell Road (about 3 miles in if you take the north-west route) was really beautiful, especially since the rain had filled it to the brim. There’s a couple of places where you can also cool off in the creek which is a nice bonus. Wear good boots, the 16.2 I think is a little shy of how long it really is....or feels. A lot of creatures on the path too...careful not to step on the hundreds of newts/salamanders I encountered.

This trail is more for someone who is learning to hike with a lack of land nav skills or a trail runner. The waterfall was more like a trickle and had a terrible smell coming off the water. If I go back it will be more for running than hiking.

The trail was rocks under your feet thru lots of woods uphill to an overlook. Then you see the fire tower. There is some downhill rock scramble and back to rocky path walking . It was a bit dull.

Did this loop for the 4th of July, the begining was very buggy, slippery and humid. We started early, maybe around 730AM. Could have been because it rained it rained yesterday, either way rocks were slippery when wet so be careful! Tons of salamanders on the trail too until you start ascending. Tower trail was a bit muddy and rocky but overall not too bad. Once you start ascending and the trail becomes dryer it was definitely more fun! The rock scrambles at the top were fun too and the reward is a great view!

The route that is saved with this trail on All Trails must have been hand drawn as opposed to recorded. The actual distance following the blazes was more like 6.2 miles and there were several times I got the 'Off Trail' message although I was following right along. The 'Stoney' in the trail name hits the nail on the head. Lots of rocks to stop on and around while navigating this route. I willl post a trail suggestion to look at my recording to relplace the one associated

So this app lies it claims it’s only around a 1900ft elevation gain its really more like 5,100! It was the hardest trail I’ve done because of the elevation gains.

I didn’t see any waterfall on this trail. Maybe dried up bc no rain this summer, never seen a drier summer in jersey

Trail is great! Overgrown in some areas and some poison ivy but that is what you get being outdoors:)

Hiking

We hiked it counter clockwise which changes the dynamic quite a bit. If you do it like us, you will start with a gradual and easy hike for the first few miles followed by ascent to AT which is also quite gradual. Once you get to AT there are a few spots with the view including the one by the Fire Tower. From that point down it’s a rocky path which starts of as a very steep decent but becomes more gradual shortly. At the bottom of the Green trail , you can make a quick detour to a small lake, which had a few groups picnicking. From there it’s a nice and short stroll along a creek back to the parking lot. If you do it the clock wise way, I’d imagine that the climb to the Tower could be pretty challenging. We arrived there at 8:30 and were the first car to park. This combined with hiking against the flow gave the whole trail to ourselves all the way to the AT. So it is a pretty good option for people not willing to encounter a ton of others. Overall a decent and relaxing long hike lacking a little bit in number of lookouts and intensity of exercise with the exception of the Green portion.

GREAT hike for a family—we went with a four, six, and nine year old. Great view up and around the tower.

Nice trail with a few places to scramble over rocks. Can venture slightly off trail to go near pretty lake. Good time!
