Explore the most popular wildlife trails in Ramapo Valley County Reservation with hand-curated trail maps and driving directions as well as detailed reviews and photos from hikers, campers and nature lovers like you.

More of a stroll/walk around a lake, but keep in mind we only did the loop around the pond. Mostly power walkers, joggers and dog walkers. Folks fishing as well.

Quite a few trail options and nice scenic views

Went with two kids—8 and 6–They got a little bored while we stuck to the road, but when we went off the road and on some actual trails or climbing over some of the many rocks scattered along the hills, they enjoyed themselves. Haven’t made it all the way around loop yet. Will probably have to do it without kids.

Hiked as a stewardship trip for Blue Friday with Campmor and NYNJ Trails yesterday! Nice initial incline and with the rest of the trail being very reasonable. Went with 12 year olds, dogs, and a mixed group. Nice views of the valley! Kudos to hikers for keeping it clean, we picked up less garbage than I thought we would!

Awesome hiking trail in NJ! Great views!! Challenging with some climbing and perfect distance!

This place is incredible! Been here numerous times. I have hiked all trails in all seasons. Best hiking by far in New Jersey. I have been to many trails in south and central and west nj. This place has all types of trails. Great workout trails that last hours and small easy quick ones to take in the scenery. Great for dogs and kids. Drive two hrs every other weekend to get here and it's worth it. Make sure you arrive early in weekend before 930am. This place gets tons of visitors and the lot is jammed packed. Beautiful streams and waterfalls and overlooks and lakes. Plan accordingly if you take deep long hike. Never go off trail ticks snakes and getting lost can be avoided if planned and prepared.

Note; if your taking rt 17 as if aug 27th road blocked but there is a detour.

Perfect if you just want to see the wooded outdoors. This path has 2 lakes for you to lookout on. Also features a beautiful waterfall. I know somewhere in the park you can go swimming near the waterfall. Also bring your dog if you can. There are tons of people with their dogs on this trail. Also its pretty well made for strollers too. Just be prepared for the big inclines while making your way up to the big lake.

Lots of free parking and easy trail signs.
The lower loop of the park around the lake is great for an easy stroll and great view. The trial to the top has some s steep parts but it's manageable. The trail has great views of the stream leading down the mountain. Lots of dogs along the way and stroller friendly

Great trail the trial gets steep but I got a running stroller up the hill.
Lots of water falls and small animals along the way.
Great way to spend about 2-3 hours

Great place for a hike! starts off moderate level and then once you hit the loop it's easy. Brought our dog and had a blast

Did the Yellow trial counter clockwise to the reservoir then the blue trail back. Three good views in 3.3 miles. Good with kids.

Considering Sterling Forest is not that far away, you're better off going there. Ramapo is okay but it's too close to highways and flight paths, if a little tranquility and distance from man-made noises is important to you.

Love it

Variety of trail difficulties

Often crowded

Saturday, April 15, 2017

No cave, no waterfall, basically just the lake. Lots of people at beginning and end of the trails since it is connected with the easy ones.

Let me start off by saying that I love dogs and am a former dog owner.

Now on to the review. Nice place to hike and fish but like has been stated before...too many people and WAY, WAY too many dogs, a good number of which are unleashed. Ramapo Reservation is for all intents and purposes a large dog park.

Overall I felt unsafe there with my young children due to the excessive number of dogs. I am surprised the NJ Park Services do not enforce leash laws at such a crowded park.

Great place in the Bergen County area to go day hiking. Dog friendly and easily accessible. Many trails to choose from, some of which are easy, and some that are more difficult. I have been going here for 25 years now, and it is never boring no matter what season.

Great getaway from Ramapo College studies

trail running

There is so much variety in terms of difficulty and distance, single track and country road. It is true that the very beginning is touristy but once you get deep enough into the woods you don't see many people. Very good for trail running and training steep inclines.

If you're looking to get away from people this is not the place to go.... not many people deep on the trails but it's like walking on a city street at the beginning and end......selfie sticks, kids and dogs.....definitely not a favorite

This place has a trail for every level. We started at the orange/blue to the yellow and stopped at the reservoir, then we took the pink 3/4 way around the reservoir and made a left onto the yellow which we had a little trouble finding, eventually we got on track with help from other hikers having the same problem, we continued on yellow to Ridge overlook the onto blue and back to our starting point. 4.5 miles 2.5 hrs. Good challenge and good workout. Bring snacks and water and enjoy this great place.

Great for a challenging run

Great trail. Ascents are challenging but manageable. They do a great job of marking and maintaining the trail. They also stock the river with trout on Thursdays if you're into fishing. This trail is on the easy side of moderate. Better for trail running.

Visited for the first time, a week ago. The place is amazing, if you are into photography bring your camera, it is guarantee that you will find some amazing photo opportunities. If you have knee issues, just don't forget to bring your knee support. And just enjoy the nature walk. Unfortunately there is no biking in the park. But there is plenty of walking trails. The place is also dog friendly, just make sure you have the leash and drinking water. Prepare to have him or her jump into the lake, saw several dogs just enjoying the lake and going in for a quick swim!

Excellent place to go hiking with your dog. Walk straight in from the parking lot and go directly a pillow on the main trail, and you'll find very clean water reservoir were tons of dogs go swimming. There are also many beautiful overlook points, inside trails that are much more difficult than the main trail to the Upperlake. This park is great for beginners, plain exercise, walking laps around the lower Lake on flat ground, or visiting waterfalls in marshland at higher altitude. Fishing is possible however no bicycling at this park
