Clockwise on the giant loop is noticeably more challenging and recommended if you want more climbs. The counter clockwise direction seems to feature longer steadier but almost invisible climbs that don’t really challenge you like you feel when you head the other way.

The Parking for this hike is limited to 2 or 3 cars. There is a pull off on the right side of Pool Hollow Ave as soon as you turn off W Oakland Ave. You need to walk to the end of Pool Hollow Ave to start the hike.

Took this clockwise. Northwest side has a section with an unmarked trail. Better would be to continue north on the well marked brown and orange trails, which loops back where the unmarked trail (which is not that noteworthy) ends. Would add about 1.5 miles to the length. Otherwise this is a nice trail. West side has few travelers and interesting building remnants, and less car noise. I think I prefer this counterclockwise though, will have to try that again.

Great hike and great scenery of the lake! Be careful that you take the same path coming back. I somehow missed a marking and took the wrong way back, causing me to be on residential streets through Pompton Lakes back to Haskell.

So many bugs, but otherwise a pleasant hike. Saw 2 deer and lots of squirrels.

Rocky through the woods and then a gravely path around the lake. Plenty of shade for a hot day. We missed the cut away from the lake so ended up only doing 3.8 miles

HikingPrivate property

Just moved to NJ from CA, this I was my first hike here!! Parked in the lot (free parking!) and hiked until I turned right to the Hoeferlin trail. Got to a point marked as private property with a rope, so I turned around to return the way I came. Pretty forest setting. Lots of hikers on the main Ramapo trail.

We start from the skyline parking area and take the blue trail which leads to the dam. This trail is not very scenic. We leave the lake area and decide to take the red trail. I have not take the other trails but believe the red trail to be the offroad trail. It was extremely rocky, which gave our ankles a good workout. We pretty much had the entire trail to ourselves. Noone else was on it. We did happen across a black bear off in the distance, we were astonished and kept moving forward. There was plenty of tree shade and not too many bugs in the middle of July. My fitbit logged me in at max 137 bpm, 1 hour in fatburn mode, 55 minutes in cardio, so it is a really good workout. I will probably check out the other trails in this park before summers end.

Amazing trail with great views. A little rocky hike in the beginning, enjoyable though before reaching the lake loop but definitely worth it. Went on the 4th of July weekend and surprisingly it wasn’t crazy. The parking lot was busy but you can easily keep your distance from others.

I trek this route about 1/month. It’s a nice moderate climb to a flat walk around the lake. There are a few points that are rocky and elevate moderately around the northwest section of the trail (optional), but it’s otherwise straight through. Today was moderately trafficked. Enjoy!

Solid trail. Not extremely challenging but enough variation to keep its interesting. Well-marked routes overall. I think I prefer taking the yellow hoeferlin vs the white trail, more variation and slightly more difficult, though abt half to 3/4 mile shorter when doing the loop. Good for families and dogs. Lots of bugs in some places, definitely spray yourself.

Good trail for a tough run. Some steep, rocky ascent/ descents. Nice views and some interesting old structures. The start of the trail (yellow) can be a bit challenging to follow. I lost the blazes once or twice at the start and had to double back. Some of the grass areas are pretty overgrown so keep an eye out for snake. Overall great spot.

As other reviews posted, the trail is rocky and you are close to the highway at some parts and can hear a lot of traffic. Unfortunately, there was quite a lot of litter too, mostly water bottles and cigarette butts. Otherwise an okay trail.

Always a beautiful hike at Ramapo. We started at Indian head trail and went off the path and met at the cannonball trail. Once you come close to the lake there are multiple spots to sit and relax as well as swimming. The trails are cascaded with trees so it’s a great hike for a hot/humid day. One of my favorite places to hike, plenty of points of incline and views that are worth the hard work!

Cut it short due to heat and bugs by taking one of the connectors which was not maintained at all. Parking lot 50% full by 9 am on a Monday.

great beautiful hike, unfortunately people leave their dogs poop on the trail, also lots of bags with dog poop left... BIG UP YOU DOGS POOP and stop leaving poop bags ! care about hiking then care about the trails and how you leave it.

really nice trail. challenging enough to get a good workout in without killing yourself. i would have given it a higher rating (the views and trail were beautiful and peaceful), but you will definitely pass a few groups of people along the way. it wasn’t too much to bother me, though.
