Pretty and not boring with different terrains

easy hike, nicer part is first half mile.

Perfect trail with nice views.
Have an option to combine or switch between trails.

Pretty hike!

Loved the variety of terrain, a lake, castle ruins, views of Wanaque Reservoir and Appalachian foothills from high up near the water tower. This map will help you find your way: NYNJTC_NJParkMaps-RamapoMtn_2015-85x11.pdf

Enter onto tracks and follow them to the field entrance. Yes you can cross, please do so safely. Stay left for Cannonball Trail in Red. If you hit white then you missed the split to the left for Red. Wrap the pond at the top of the trail. Descent trail, once your on them they are pretty well maintained. Good routes but no crazy elevations changes or overlooks. Good for mountain biking!

beautiful, but the trail markings need work.

pretty good views. nice stream, good lake. the trails should be better marked, we ended up cutting off a third of the hike before we realized it.

Hiked this trail on a Wednesday afternoon. This trail is combination of blue, yellow, white, and red trails. Some parts of the trail are not marked well. Overall it was a decent hike. Lots of flies and frogs. Nice elevation, gets your heart pumping. AllTrails map helped me to find my trail when I didn’t see any trail marks.

Hiked here around 9a on Sunday Father’s day and medium sized lot almost filled to capacity. Took the Oakland exit off Route 287 north and entrance was on left about 1/2 mile after exiting.

Hike is primarily under shade of the woods and sometimes buggy. We did the blue trail to white with Van Slyke castle as our goal. True as others stated beginning of hike immediately takes you upwards and some scrambling and bouldering involved but moderate hike for most part. We took the labs and they were fine on leash.

Castle ruins were so neat to discover and the views towards NYC was breath taking. Ruins were approx 1.75 miles from lot so easily done. We packed lunch and ate when we reached the water tower that was another 1/4 mile beyond castle.

Def recommend. What a little gem.

Caution: poison ivy strewn around ruins.

Nice place with good decent elevations. Not good trail marks. Easy to get lost. Have offline maps

The river is too full to allow you to cross without getting your shoes wet. For that reason, it's better to just start the hike from other trail heads. Other than that, the trail was well marked and not too strenuous. Be careful of snakes. We saw a big Mexican black kingsnake next to the river.

Unfortunately a tree has fallen on the stream bridge, creating a damn and a waterfall over it. It's not crossable unless you're willing to wade and climb over a fallen tree, not really safe, definitely not possible with kids.

Lovely walk for all ages. Easy trails and pretty water. Wear bug spray and remember there are no bathrooms anywhere!

A nice hike around the lake.

One of the more interesting trails I’ve hiked to say the least — a combination of roads, sharp inclines boulder scattered trails and even some light rock climbing, as well as a really cool rundown castle at the summit of the hike. My one complaint is that the trail highlighted on this map is not the cannonball trail, but a combination of three. The trails are well marked but you never know which trail you’re actually on. As long as you follow the app’s mapped trail to a T, you should be fine. The views are some of the best in New Jersey.

I did a 7-mile loop which included the Lookout Trail and a portion of Cannonball Run in a good amount of snow. The trails are well-marked and there were a lot of great views along Lookout.

Been hiking Cannonball for practically my entire life. Grew up with it in my backyard. Well marked trail and good terrain. Always a fun hike.

Nice hike- good elevation in the beginning to get the heart pumping.

Nice, scenic, relaxing. My dog really enjoyed herself.

Pretty nice trail, especially during the foliage season. Some of the blue markers are a little rundown so be careful and pay attention. The blue trail does get a little steep in areas so when there are leaves make sure they are dry! The park is usually crowded near the bodies of water but as soon as you get further into a true trail hike you find your alone time for sure! I must of only run into two people on blue during a beautiful crowded Saturday morning.

Easy and scenic! My 5yr old and I took a nice mini-adventure around this beautiful lake.

I really love this hike- what a pleasant surprise! Such variety in scenery and terrain. A great mix of beauty and challenge for a Saturday morning.

From lower parking lot we took the blue trail past the lake to white. The beginning of castle hill trail climbs steeply but is easily done past Van Slyke Castle and its stone water tower. Continued on white where it terminates and picked up red circle trail or Cannonball trail. Follow carefully as it twists and winds and some blazes are missing and/or in poor shape. Completed the loop and returned back on blue to parking lot.

Not a strenuous hike. Very beautiful view!

Another wonderful hike. Although the hike is pretty easy, it has one of the best views with a gorgeous lake and a ruined castle. Don't miss the castle, the climb is the only time u ll burn ur thighs, although the views from up top are spectacular too.
We started from the skyline drive parking up north, at the Hofferlin trail and came our way down to the lake, before doing a full circle and then the deserted castle and back again. We deviated a lot off the suggested trail but overall a very good experience.
